The Day of a Nurse

I had just clocked in and already I was thrown into a world of chaos. The waiting room was almost full and more were flooding in. My hands took on a mind of their own, writing down patents information before my brain could even process what I was recording.
The cases flooding in seemed to be getting worse and worse. Before, it was little things like a wound that needed stitches or a sprained ankle. Soon enough, it turned into a house of horrors. Cases started coming in with missing eyes, third degree burns and worse.
It was awful, there was just so much. Cries of the sirens, wails of pain, tears of fear from family members, the shouting of doctors’ orders. I couldn't handle this, it was just to much. But I had to. I was professionally trained, I had taken years of schooling and thrown my life into this profession. If I couldn't help these people who would?
I didn't’t have access to any source of news at the moment. I could only wonder what had happened out there that would cause so much carnage.
The hospital was in a frenzy. Every doctor and nurse was needed in three different places at once. We called in every available doctor and nurse that was supposed to be off duty and it still wasn't enough. Nurses started filling in for doctors and taking over the more minor cases while they took care of the more extreme tasks.
I was assigned to rooms 303-305 on the third floor. As soon as I was notified of what rooms needed my assistance I rushed to the elevator. Once the doors were closed I took a moment to compose myself and prepare my mind for the gruesome things I was bound to see.
Most people cannot understand the mindset that we must put ourselves in to perform our jobs. We must disassociate and push down the emotional part of our brain. Ignore the blood and gore to focus on the task at hand.
Finally, the elevator doors opened and I went to the front desk for a briefing on the first patient I was about to see. T-This case... this... this one was bad, really bad. I stood in front of the door number whose file I was reviewing. Taking a deep breath in anticipation, I mentally prepared myself for what I would see on the other side. Opening the door, I put on a smile and said "Hello, my name is Nurse Samantha and I’ll be helping you today".
The End
