We didn't spend much of our time together, of course. We were doing different degrees with different timetables, I had the radio, writers group, newspaper, and we were both preparing for finals and looking for graduate jobs. Mo was more and more involved with the hard left political movements she'd got involved with after the occupation. Which made her suprise announcment all the more surprising.
"I've got a job," she said.
"A job? Do you have time for that. You've finals in two weeks."
"No, I mean a graduate job, starting in July."
"Wow, well done, what is it?"
"It's the graduate management training scheme at Megabastard Inc."
"Megabastard! They're the ones who poison baby-milk and torture puppies aren't they?"
"They're not so bad Terrence."
"I was quoting one of the leaflets you gave me."
"Yeah, but it's £22,000 a year to start, plus company gym and health insurance."
"That's not much of a perk. You never go to a gym, and you realise that we have free health service in this country - that's unless Megabastard Corporation get their way, I remember what your leaflet said about their lobbying to privatise the NHS." But my words did nothing to persuade her. At the end of the day words are just words, and they never change anything.
After our final exams I stayed in Swansea for a while, looking for jobs, trying to write and claiming the dole. Mo went on a two week vacation before entering the real work and Eddie and Kaz moved to London.
Mo returned for one night only, she left me with a lump behind my knee to remember her by, then she too was gone forever.
I was left alone, abandoned by my friends. No job, no money, and then out found out about my uncle's bequest.
If I was going to be alone, I reasoned, I might as well do the full monty.
