Dreams of Fish & Chips
Wrapped in news long forgotten
Rock Eel and greasy chips
A feast in old news wrapped
Salt & vinegar drowned
Clutching mum’s trusting hand
An eager child Duffle-coated,
In grim determination
Leans against the icy wind
Through November’s soggy gloom
To that bright-lit holy shrine,
A Steam-filled cathedral of ready food
Yesterday’s news cocooned the hunger cure
Swift wrapped in yesterday’s news
No time for posh plates
Half way home
We could never wait
Like a stolen kiss
Still burning hot
Tasting even better
Sneakily hidden
Between sheets of
Ink-smudged, paper
Recycled in the sixties
