Last Night On Earth

"They idolise us, yearn to be us, act like us and claim our strengths. They try to befriend us, fall in love with us and worship us. They know nothing of the lust, they claim our sexuality, want to mate with us, and yet we have nothing. We are dead."
Vocu looked up from his screen and stared into the distance across his room. Moonlight shone through his window and he gazed into the night, thinking of conquests past and still to come.
"They claim an affinity with us, some of them, they have their teeth moulded and claim to need to feast of each other. Great orgies are held in our name, razor blade kisses and free for all sex. Yet when I think of what we are I am disgusted at what we do we do to survive."
Vocu breathed a heavy sigh and took a sip of his drink, washed it around his mouth and swallowed. He closed his eyes and tilted his head back and let out a scream of desperation.
"I despair at these beings. I look upon them with contempt. Running the streets, they dress in some clichéd idea of how we are supposed to dress, spend all their money trying to fulfil an ideal that simply doesn't exist. There is reality and fantasy. They live in total fantasy. The sex, the drugs, the lust, all the stuff of dreams whilst I... what am I?"
Vocu did not know, he spent a few minutes trying to define himself and the others like him.
"I am a being caught between two states, neither live nor dead. I do not breathe the air, I do not get to see the light, I sniff at the flowers in the moonlight and feel nothing. I crave their blood but most of all I crave their freedoms, freedoms that I once took for granted before the change. They see me as an ideal, forever young, forever living. I can no longer embrace life, I can not touch eternal sleep. I am nothing."
Vocu looked to the window again. He saw the night beginning to brighten.
"I cannot live as nothing, these four hundred years have deadened me. One last glimpse of the light is all I ask."
Vocu saved the document, published it to his blog and went to stand by the window. As he stood there gazing across the cityscape he tried to remember what it was like to walk amongst the sunlight, to move around without the constant hunger. The sun rose higher as he watched the streets begin to fill with cars, the people awaken in the building opposite his apartment. He watched them opening their curtains and blinds, stretching out the sleep from their bodies, watched them brewing coffee and making toast.
The sun rose higher still, the light began to creep up his building, "soon," he thought, "soon."
Vocu wanted, for all he was worth, to feel the suns warmth on his flesh one last time. He walked back to his desk and took his glass through to the kitchen.. He filled it with water from the tap and resumed his place by the window. "Today is the day," he though. The light had crept up higher still and he smiled. He smiled knowing that the centuries of torment were almost over, that he would be free. Vocu stretched his arms across the window frame and he waited. He felt his torso warming up. He could feel the heat rising. As the sunlight finally hit him he smiled knowing that in a few more moments he would be free.
