Someone posted an image on my face book page stating that wars are started by banks who control governments. I have to say that this is an inaccuracy on so many levels its almost amusing. Unfortunately, it sums up some of the public's perception of how conflict scenario's are played out. To look at this accurately, a historical position of conflict would have to be analysed. Unfortunately, this would fill a book. I can only suggest that people read Hobsbawm, to get a better idea of the nature of the machine called war.
But for the sake of argument and to prove a point, I will look into the first two global conflicts, and how they started, the myth of the cold war, and the many spouted conflicts since; as clearly and as carefully as I can.
Prior to world war one, the world was heading for a time of what could be termed peace. Nations had extended their borders to encompass other lands. The worst for this was Great Britain, a nation who during the Victorian era essentially made trading pacts with other nations and then invaded them once they annoyed the native population (for evidence of this see the first uprising in India of 1847) The first world war began at the end of this extended period of colonization and patriation of what can only really be described as slave nations . In this world, Europe was tied together with treaties; (an example of a treaty that is still in existence is the Treaty of Utrecht that is still enforced today since 1713... yes 300 years and counting.) and it was these treaties that prevented the nations from going to war and killing each other in large groups of men wearing uniforms that made them stand out like a sore thumb.
However, technology moved on, mainly due to the civil war conflict of the United states; and though the horse was not yet replaced the sword was replaced with the revolver, and the automatic rifle was built and cannon was replaced by larger and more powerful versions of itself. while the warship: the Dreadnaught, the atomic bomb of its day was constructed again and again and again, in the hope that they would never be used.
When the arch duke Ferdinand was shot, in 1914, many of the nations who had treaties with nations had to take a position. And as the war escalated so the treaties that were signed to prevent conflict became the very reason why nations went to war.
So the propaganda machine began, men were conscripted or pushed to join, unaware of what sort of conflict was to take place. Men built Trenches, and made battle lines as they had done many years before, but no one really knew what would happen as these men walked out of the trenches and charged at the enemy lines.
Men were mown down, sliced into ribbons by automatic weapons, gassed in bombings and shot down from the sky in planes that could only be defined as a twenty minute attack. This was a form of warfare unexpected and unparalleled in human history. For four years it continued,as the treaties were hastily rewritten, and greater technology was used to create means to survive in a mud, human excrement, blood and sweat filled Trench. eventually -for reasons history still is unaware about- the war was over in 1918. And France and England who had more troops left than Germany, ( because Russia had pulled out due to a civil war of its own, created by the same aristocracy behind w.w.1) brought together all the nations involved in what was called "The league of Nations" this League blamed Germany for everything and demanded that Germany pay for the first war. This led to resentment by German soldiers who had fought bravely in a war that only the aristocracy wanted. it was this hatred that led one man: Adolf Hitler, to become the spokesman for a nation.
Hitler inspired Germany. he took a bankrupt nation and made it work again. Even though the Nazi machine had only one real goal: conflict. and though the world was in an economic depression, Germany's plight was far more complex as the rest of the world -prior to w.w.2 had made a wall about the nation increasing sanctions and leaving it almost ungovernable. Hitlers rise to power was fast, and his building program intense. (as well as illegal in the eyes of the world at the time.) His promotion of ideas such as fascism, incorporating this with the science of eugenics, at the time still considered fashionable, due -in part- to the spread of the ideas relating to Darwin's theory of evolution, allowed radical thinking to take place there. Also the civil war in Russia led to the first great revolution in social thinking: communism, or a form of communism to have a part to play in human history. By 1939 Hitlers ideas began to spread. So he invaded Poland and because we had a treaty with Poland we sent in an expeditionary force to help. Germany was more prepared and so began world war 2.
As can be seen so far. World war 2 was born from the seeds of world war one; and world war one was fought because lawyers got their words wrong on treaty's that our messy politicians failed to interpret clearly.
After the end of world war 2. and the increase of technology (the creation of the atomic bomb) nations came together in the building of the United Nations. However, battle lines were drawn once more: this time between capitalistic thinking and communist or socialist thinking, and two huge superpowers: Russia, and America stood in a huge face off, setting up lunatic regimes here, (Saddam) training local tribes men there (Al, Queda) and exploiting the one thing we all need... oil... to make our machines work, to make our electricity work and to keep us in the free world happy.
This came at a cost. It left us with a poverty stricken Africa, and nations torn apart by interested parties determined for them to choose one social ideal over another.
Eventually Russia collapsed after the Chernobyl disaster; however, this did not bring about a win for democracy or the capitalist dream. It eventually led to the groups that the west set up, to turn upon their creator. Like Frankenstein's monster, one at a time the capitalist nations plug the dam and the more they have done so, the greater the consequences, while all the oil dries up.
So here we are: its 2013. This is the world we have made for ourselves. its not run by some cartel, its held together with string and hope. run by people like you and me, full of faults and doubts and fears.
Wars are not made by a group of evil warmongers, but are started by lawyers and ended by soldiers. This is the only truth there is
yes ignorance is strength.
