My Oblivion

It gets to me like
Dirt underneath my fingernails
Creeps up real slow
Steals the color from the canvas
Leaving a white, barren wasteland
Light is a funny thing
It casts shadows in plain view
Be careful now, or it will
Swallow you whole
Engulfed in flames, the eyes
Do nothing but stare
I am somehow less than perfect
In their ever-watchful glare
After all, to live is to die
And the dove must land somewhere
I feel it here inside me
The shrieks and wails grow strong
And everything spins around me
Blurred lights follow the moon
Yet don’t come close to its perfection
I can’t get it out of my head
It’s scratching at the surface
The acid rain is melting into
Goodie-goodie gumdrops
But the little girl is running away
