The next day, my new life started. Rubean let me sleep in the biggest bedroom of his house. It had a giant four-poster bed, and room serice. At any time, day or night, I could ring the chef, and he'll bring me whatever I fancied.
Anyway, last night, I'd rang my mum and dad through Rubean's CT (Communication Transfer) to let them know I was OK, and that I haven't been kidnapped. I even passed the CT onto Rubean, to prove that Rubean was indeed a very nice person. I even told them what my new life was going to entail; they seemed worried at first, but by the time I had to say goodbye, they reassured me they were happy and told me to be careful.
The following day, I started my new life. All Rubean did was ring his usual clients and tell he had a new partner-in-crime. And then he elected me his PA, or Personal Assitant. That meant that I had the job that Rubean normally did, except I only did half the work. Whenever Rubean was unavailable for any reason, like he had to pick up some more stock, then I was at hand to answer calls and make memos of what people wanted.
I woke up at nine and had my breakfast finished by ten. at quarter past ten, Rubean said I could start my new job immediately. He had to go and pick up some more LingleDoppers. They were in big demand; people left, right and centre were forever calling up and asking for them. I didn't have time to ask what LingleDoppers were, Rubean sat me down at the desk, basically told me to answer calls and take memos, and ran out of the room.
I looked around the room, hardly daring to believe it. All my life, I was convinced that I'd got a lousy life; forever up in my bedroom, listening to music, with only my rotten brother for company, and now, today, here, I'd started a new life, which looked to be better than the one I'd just left behind.
Meanwhile...
"Dinner!" Called out Karina Landry.
Her husband and younger son arrived at the table to a delicious meal of roast pork and roast potatoes. Karina sat down at her meal, but after five minutes, she shouted up the stairs: "DINNER MER!"
"He's not here, sweetheart," Mr Landry announced.
"Oh, that's right," Karina sat down again. The tears started streaming down her face.
"Sorry," she said. "I can't get used to Mer not being here."
"Yeah, I know," said Mr Landry. "We'll just have to get him cloned..."
