"Charlotte!" They all shouted after me. The twins ran up to me, and grabbed my hands; they tried to pull me up. But it was too late, I was already seeping through to another level.
I very nearly landed on the ground, unconscious, but I was pretty lucky. I stood up and brushed the dirt off myself, and looked around at my bearings.
I seemed to have left the woods behind. Sunshine blazed overhead, very few trees thrived here, only one here and another one over there. And the ground looked like something the Sahara Desert would be proud of.
I heard a dull thud behind me. I turned. Frankie and the twins had sunk down here with me. They, too, stood up to brush themselves off and look around.
"Do you know where we are?" I asked them.
Sean shook his head. "No idea," he said.
"Do you yhink we better move around and find out?" His brother inquired.
We took his advice and moved in the direction of one of the trees.
We walked and we walked and we walked, but we didn't get anywhere. We were still in the Sahara Desert place after an hour of walking.
"Charlotte? Charlotte!" There was a voice calling my name, it sounded like Dean. But it also sounded very far away. Then I felt a force on my arm, like someone or something was shaking me. I shut my eyes, willing to make the feeling go away. I opened them up again. Suddenly, I wasn't in the Sahara Desert anymore. I was back in the shed where we were all locked, but it wasn't dark anymore. I looked around in disbelief. Where had the desert gone? Dean was sitting next to me, his hand on my arm.
"Are you all right, Chaz?" He asked. "You seemed very far away."
I looked over at the door, it was open, which explained where the darkness had gone.
"How did that get open?" I asked.
"Uh, this dude came and unlocked it. That old woman was him dressed up, it was a practical joke," Sean explained. He looked at me strangely. "Don't you remember? It happened about two seconds ago?"
"No!" I cried. "A couple of seconds ago, we were in a Sahara Desert type place! We escaped through a part of the wall which was made off wood, and I fell through quicksand!" I looked at the others. They were looking as though they thought I'd lost my marbles.
I started to feel along the wall. I couldf feel mostly plaster. I felt along all the walls, but I didn't feel anything made from wood. I sunk to my knees in disbelief.
"Are you okay, Chaz?" Asked Frankie. "Maybe you fell asleep and dreamt it while we were in here."
"How long have we been in here?" I asked.
"About ten minutes."
"But - But, we were wandering this desert place for an hour!" I cried. "It happened! I know it did!"
"Come on, let's get her home," said Dean. "I really don't think she's feeling well."
Frankie and Sean agreed. They both stood up, and helped me to my feet. Then they stood, Frankie on one side of me, Sean on the other. Then they carted me out of the shed, and we went back to Frankie's house, Frankie and Sean dragging me along. When we got to Frankie's house, he and the twins ordered me lay down and rest before the twins and I went home.
That was nearly ten years ago, and I still can't explain what happened. Sean thinks, and Frankie and Dean agree with him, that perhaps it was a psychological thing. He had said that I'd mentioned that I didn't like being in a small space for too long. He said that because I was in a small space for quite a while, my mind started to play tricks on me. Oh, well, that was the only answer anyone of us came up with, so I'll have to be satisfied with it...
