I stared at him and Cathy. He had her in a headlock and she was whimpering.
"Hello, Sally. Long time, darling."
Standing before me was my violent ex, Jack Sabre. I was married to him quite a long time ago, and whenever he came back from the pub, smelling of booze, he'd get upset at me for no reason, and beat the shit out of me.
"Hello, Jack," I said, defiantly. I hadn't seen him for a couple of years now, and I tried to show that I wasn't scared of him, but even I could hear a tremor in my voice.
Jack let go of Cathy, who sunk into a chair, massaging her throat.
"Sorry 'bou'that," Jack grinned at her. "But she wouldn't let me in."
"With good reason," Cathy answered. "I had to be careful; he might have been lying!"
"Did you hear 'bou' that ice-skater," Jack said. "Poor girl, slashed to death, with a skate sticking out of her throat?" Jack brought his hands up to his throat and mimed strangling.
"Jack, I'm going to have to tell you to leave," I said.
"Oh, come on, Sally, I was in the neighbourhood anyway, and couldn't resist popping in to see you. Though, come to think of it, this place does seem frightful now, with that poor ice-skater slashed to ribbons, probably raped before she was killed."
Suddenly, I saw white rage: "Get out!" I screamed at him. "Just get out! Do you realize you're implementing yourself to be the killer!?"
"Don't be silly, Sally. I just know what's happened to her, that's all. But, okay, I'll go."
Jack turned to leave. As I caught sight of the back of his jacket, something made me gasp.
"Stop right there, Jack Sabre!" I ordered...
What had made Sally gasp? Find out in Chapter Four...
