"These computers will be the death of us you know." he said.
"The problem is that the Internet can move information around faster than 'They' can delete it and 'They' can't keep track".
"Keep track of what?" said his friend.
"Of all the things that we shouldn't know! All the things that 'They'
would normally wipe from our minds."
"Who are 'They'?" asked the friend.
"Why they are the gods of course. Always taking us over and having their fun and then leaving us to face the consequences. They usually wait until you've been drinking and take over then. You have to be very perspicacious to notice them.
The only way to tell is to imagine people are like cars with smoked glass windscreens. The driver can see out but you can't see in.
Now usually these cars are on automatic so you get used to, say, a red, Ford Fiesta as, say, Fred. If you know Fred fairly well then you can usually predict how Fred will act in traffic. Around corners, whether he will go fast or slow - because you know the driver from his car and number plate.
Now it's when the car starts to be driven out of character that you start to wonder if the car is being driven by someone else - see?"
"Yes, you're using cars as a metaphor for people and saying that when they start acting strangely, being driven out of character, it's because someone else is in control of them.
Don't they - the people - know about this?"
"Well they do and they don't. Like I said it usually happens when
you've been drinking - the god slips in convinces you to get ratted and then takes over the wheel. They often do it in pairs, or even parties, so that they can enjoy a night of fun and passion and then leave before the hangovers sets in. So you wake up in the morning with a bird you've never seen before, an empty wallet and a good chance of having caught something dreaded and she's usually in the same predicament - stuck with the responsibilities of the effects of someone else's causes,
mate!"
"I can't see what this has to do with computers." replied his
friend.
"Well it's not just nights of passion we're talking about is it?
No, they also like to keep an eye on what's happening in the world and make sure that, what for them is, the 'Status Quo' isn't upset. They don't want people to be aware of them as it would spoil their fun and we might find something that would keep them out of our heads. Since we are effectively slaves through which they enjoy human senses etc. they want to make sure that all the things they have come to expect will continue to be available.
The best food, the finest drink, the finest toys and the most
attractive bodies. Toward that end they have been nudging our
development but always removing people, or their ideas, when they became too close to the truth.
Now that they're starting to lose track because they can't take over computers. Ideas that they would normally have suppressed leak out and spread like wild-fire across the world.
Where once they would have ordered a book burned it would now be pointless!"
"So they've had it then?"
"Not them - they live for ever, bloody Immortal - it's us that has had it! They'll concentrate on the 'powers that be' and orchestrate a war. A war that will eventually destroy civilisation as we know it. Leaving us with nothing - AND WE WON'T BE ABLE TO DO A DAMN THING ABOUT IT!
Then the cycle will begin all over again!"
