Come Back and Sing to Me

I am sure that throughout my life, I will always remember…
the last time I felt the racing, frantic heartbeat, of a fallen bird...
and how all of its fears just disappeared, in one last blink...
a beautiful life lost in my hands, a song no longer to be heard.
“Throw it away!” others said, “It's just a bird!”
“Just a common, everyday thrush I think…”
Yet I couldn't, I felt too sad and too numb to feel that way
and then I realised, that her heart was still beating, now oh so slow.
So I just held her to my heart, to relax her, before I let her go...
and I remember when the sun came up, on a new and special day
I remember as it shone so brightly, across my cluttered kitchen sink...
I felt a great pride well up inside me, at least equal to its glow...
and the beauty of my thrush’s song, first heard, came into play
a truly momentous memory of a friend, I'd like to think...
I wonder if I protect and love her well, along the way…
will she come back and sing to me again, next Valentines Day
