Love & War (Tonight)

If I lay nestled under your armpit, your arm a safety blanket,
Armour of love, shielding me from harm,
I close my eyes and in this moment,
I am yours and you are mine, truly and fully,
And that is enough, enough for me to dissolve into us,
Forgot what’s going on outside our door,
However horrible, vile or criminal it may be.
I retrace every curve in your body, every line,
Piecing them together like DNA,
Kissing you in long greedy intervals,
Hot delicate embraces help to pass the time,
The faint crackle of shrapnel, gun fire,
Barely disturbs us now, so accustomed we have become.
Yet a freak sound, new and electric, makes me shudder,
He turns his head, places a delicate kiss of reassurance,
Onto my forehead, and although we sleep soundly tonight,
Shamelessly, bulletproof, in our ignorant indulgence,
Remorseless that somewhere in this broken Skelton of a city,
That piece of shrapnel has claimed a victim.
Tonight, we remain,
Safe, I nestle ever further into your embrace,
As you utter those ohh so special words,
‘I love you’,
‘I love you more’ I reply,
Blackout,
Sleep.
