Paper Girls and Boys
It's a little world she's created,
a little world of little people,
and blank stares, where everyday
you come back to it unchanged,
because stability is substantial and
basic rules are electric to the social
work.
Leech. The name became a byword,
cobbled together with some crime,
canned and contained inside the mind
of a child, walking that line between
fear, loyalty and sadness, where you
want to light the scene with release,
but you feel bad for telling.
I start by asking them to describe the
color red, or something stupid like that,
it’s usually the beginnings of stories.
My job is to pinpoint the heart of the
story, where the story is about actual
abuse. I trick their unconscious minds
into letting loose,
into revising and composing their
recollections in front of an old Victorian
dollhouse. They’re talking to me, and
disappearing, with no real spark in them,
no feeling, dramatic or intense. I’m a writer
part time, and I’ve read my share of stories
about abuse, I’ve even written a couple,
but the opening always begins with the words,
“I am still alive.”
