Cuckoo Song

The island she stands on
Is sinking day by day,
So she sings a cuckoo song
To pass her time away under dark skies.
She’s waiting for the sun
In her wellingtons,
But since this rain began,
The water carves new runs as levels rise.
A sailor he will come,
He’ll see her hopeful face,
Her eyes are stars that light the sky,
He'll take her from this place, the storm a blur.
She looks back at her life,
And songs that she recites,
The dark will fall, but she’s prepared—
Insects dance in candlelight before her.
