Stretching the House
As I woke I stretched the house
kneeding the dough
bit by bit
pushed the walls out trying not to crack the paint
it was sponged not crackle glazed
the hall I made tall, wide
whipped it up
and filled it with lemon light.
a meringue
a big mirror and wrought iron chandelier
the piped cream and chocolate
the windows look out onto my park
so capably done
the Ha-Ha a caramel river of leaves
the fields decorated with icing sheep
looking in a marzipan robin on a cherry tree can see
wit ranged round the Aga
over homemade bread
while elegant minds
converse in the library
toasting toes
contemplating crumpets
debating the port for later
and waiting in the dressing room
tonights silk
while satin slithers on the master bed
ready to cover the sweets in silver leaf
