Presumed Dead
Peeking through the window, her surprise turned to horror...
Jenny’d had a telegram from the Home Office: “Lost at Sea. - Presumed Dead.”
She’d wept and mourned all those years ago.
‘Why, have I lost my dear husband, Sam, to this terrible war?’
Jenny heard herself asking her nearest and dearest this same question over and over again.
“Time will heal! Time will heal!” How often she’d heard that phrase in the early days. But time wasn’t healing – she was as bereft as ever in losing her dear Sam to the Second World War.
‘How could I ever learn to love a man again?’ she’d asked herself repeatedly.
But she did!
Her two best friends rallied round and took her to the pictures and the local dance hall where they’d all enjoyed many a laugh.
It was on one of these jaunts the friends partnered up with three Royal Air Force pilots. Oh they were so handsome, especially the tall one who kept winking at Jenny.
In a flurry of a few heady weeks, Jenny fell headlong in love with John and they never left each other’s side.
They didn’t wait but married three months after their first meeting.
Nine months later the happy parents welcomed John Samuel.
And now Jenny was peeping through the window, expecting to see John.
She was shocked and surprised as she saw Sam standing there in her living room.
He must somehow have escaped and been mistakenly presumed dead!
‘What now!’ thought Jenny. ‘What happens now!’
Just then John turns the corner with a big smile on this face...
