Chapter 11
“I think she’s ready to come on patrol!” said Gabriel as she entered the weapon storage room below the church.
“No way, she is no were near ready for patrol yet, Gabriel!” replied Michael as strapped on a six inch blade to his arm.
“Michael, she’s ready to come on patrol, plus there will be both of us to protect her.” Gabriel wasn’t taking no for an answer, she knew that Amber was ready for a real fight, plus they could see which areas she needed more training on and Gabriel also knew that Michael knew that as well.
“I said no, Gabriel!” snapped Michael as he clipped on a harness, while fitting in the different blades into the correct compartments.
“Hay what you two arguing about now!” asked Amber as she entered the room. “Seriously, you’re like an old married couple,” she laughed as she saw Michael throw Gabriel a dirty look.
“Well,” began Gabriel “We were discussing you actually. I think you should come on patrol tonight, but, Mr Grumpy over there doesn’t think you’re ready yet, well that’s the story he’s sticking with anyway,” said Gabriel as she stuck her tongue out at Michael.
He couldn’t believe Gabriel was as old as time itself and still acted like a child sometimes “Please, Gabriel act your age, and not your shoe size,” said Michael as he looked up while fastening his boots shaking his head, “She’s not coming!”
“Well, Gabriel asked me upstairs before if I wanted to come tonight and I said yes, so actually, I am,” said Amber as she walked further into the store room and looked around for a weapon. Michael looked at Gabriel and was not impressed.
“You already asked her, and then you came down here and asked me?” Gabriel smiled awkwardly and shrugged her shoulders
“Well I already knew what you were going to say, but, Amber is ready for a patrol, and if it goes wrong then she doesn’t come for a while until she’s better trained.”
Michael shook his head. “I guess I can’t say no then now, can I?”
“Well you could, but we just wouldn’t listen,” smiled Amber as she held up a war hammer. Michael put his foot down onto the floor removing it from the edge of a large wooden box containing various close combat weapons.
“I don’t think you will need the war hammer tonight,” said Michael as he strode over to Amber, removing the weapon from her and placing it back inside the chest. “What you need is a blade, either a good sword or a dagger.” Michael opened a cabinet near the far wall, it held different types of swords, some smaller than others, some thick, some thin. “Here, try this.” Michael handed Amber a sabre,
“The handle’s quiet big don’t you think?” said Amber as she looked up at Michael,
“It’s a hand guard, to protect your knuckles and thumb,” said Michael. Amber began to move the sword around. “Remember how I showed you how to hold a sword, check your stance!” Amber held the sword low pointing it down diagonally.
“I could work with this,” she said as she placed the sword back into its scabbard.
“Let’s just hope you can!” said Michael as he cast a look at Gabriel.
“Amber, will be fine.” Gabriel assured Michael as she selected her favourite dagger which had angelic script down the blade. “Shall we?” she said as she tipped her head to Michael and Amber,
“Well I’m ready,” said Amber as she strapped the scabbard to the waist of her jeans,
“Then let’s do this.”
The streets were dark and the weather miserable as usual thought Michael as he scanned the surroundings from an abandoned buildings rooftop.
“Ok, Amber,” began Michael “what you need to do is try and push out with your mind. See if you can feel anything, smell anything”
“See anything?” said Amber as she pointed to what looked like two humans.
“Well yes, that too,” smiled Gabriel as she crept next to Amber and Michael on the roof.
“So what have we got?” whispered Gabriel to Michael. “Ask, Amber. Reach out, are they human or not?” said Michael as he scanned them himself. Amber took a deep breath and pushed out with her mind, her eyes began to widen, and all of a sudden she could see them clearly, even though it was the dead of night, it was like she had binocular and infer-red vision. She took another deep breath then she smelt something, it was a strange smell, the only think that came to mind to describe the smell was rotten eggs.
“Disgusting! They certainly smell otherworldly,” choked Amber as she held her nose with her thumb and index finger.
“What do they smell like?” whispered Gabriel
“Like rotten eggs, I mean how can they go undetected by humans, they stink!” whispered Amber while trying not to inhale through her nose.
“Humans can’t smell them, only angels, or other worldly creatures,” replied Michael.
“Lucky them,” said Amber under her breath.
“Well she’s right, they are other worldly,” said Michael.
“They, Amber, are vampires, they all smell like that,” whispered Gabriel.
“So what’s the plan of action Michael?” asked Gabriel
“Well since your leading this little expedition, it’s your call,” smiled Michael as he looked over at Gabriel with a grin on his face like a Cheshire cat.
The two vampires were searching for a quick meal, they were blood hungry, and this heightened their already heightened senses making them more lethal than usual. One of them sniffed the air “Smell that?” he asked the female vampire.
She stood still and sniffed the air raising her head similar to that of a cat taking a deep breath, tasting the air. “It’s very sweet, too sweet to be human!”
“It’s defiantly not human,” replied the male vampire as he took another breath. His eyes widening so that the pupil almost took up his full eye, all that remained was a red rim around the large black dilated pupil. “It couldn’t be!” he whispered
“Couldn’t be what?” whispered the female.
“An angel?” he replied as he moved his head side to side, now scanning the terrain with his blood hungry vision.
The female picked up a large metal pole from the floor and held it in front of herself, her eyes now widening and scanning the surroundings.
“Are you sure?” she asked while turning around slowly, a growling sound emanating from her chest. “I’m sure,” he said as he nodded to one of the old abandoned building roof’s “There’s one at least, it’s on the roof!”
Amber watched from the roof as the two vampires turned towards the building and made direct eye contact. “Crap, I think they’ve seen me!” whispered Amber to Michael. He crept forward and peered over the edge at the two vampires that was now hissing like large cats and growling while looking straight at them.
“Yup, you’re right, they have defiantly seen you!” said Michael as he pulled out Damocles. “Are you sure you want to try this?” he said as he looked at Amber.
“Yeah, I think I can handle it, I’ve killed vampires before and a demon. So at least I know what to expect.” Amber stood up and gave Michael a slight smile as she headed to the edge of the roof getting ready to jump off.
“Amber, if you need help, just shout” said Michael as he sat there looking a bit like a worried mother hen. Amber looked back and winked at Michael, before she jumped.
The male vampire growled loudly as Amber landed on the ground in a crouch. Bearing his teeth the vampire moved around to the left side of Amber, moving his head from side to side looking for an opening. At his side was the female vampire, who moved to Amber’s right. Amber remained in a crouch position watching the vampires moving to either side of her. She slowly pulled the sabre from its scabbard holding the hilt with her right hand, then the male vampire lunged forward. Amber struck out to her right at the male vampire with the blade, but he was too quick. He leaped backwards as the female vampire attacked Amber with the large metal pole she was holding, she struck Amber in her left leg knocking her down. The male vampire jumped in again this time holding a large piece of wood and smacked Amber in the head. Blood began to run down Ambers face. Both vampires hissed as they began to move slowly around Amber, keeping a safe distance out of striking range.
Amber wiped the blood from her eyes and turned around while on the floor, aiming her sabre at the closest vampire while trying to watch the other. Her leg began to throb, and her head hurt but Amber knew she had to do this alone.
Michael watched Amber from the rooftop foolish girl, you’re going to get yourself killed, I’m going down, Michael moved forward putting his foot on the ledge just as Gabriel grabbed his arm and pulled him back, “She can do this, just watch” said Gabriel as she stood next to Michael and looked down at Amber, as she began to push herself to her feet.
Amber stood up and pushed out with her senses, her eyes began to widen, then she felt something, like a vibration running through her veins, making her stronger. Amber smirked at the male vampire as he again lunged forward.
Amber used her sword and deflected the blow, setting aside the wooden log and kicked forward at the male vampire striking him in the stomach. The female vampire moved forward quickly, swinging the metal bar around. Amber worded off the bar with her sword and struck out with her left fist striking the vampire in the face, green blood dripping from the creature’s nose.
The male vampire recovered and moved forward hissing, Amber spun around and cut across with the blade, slicing the vampires throat, green blood oozing from the fatal wound. The female vampire thrust forward with the metal pole aiming for Amber’s torso, she quickly stepped aside and cut at the vampire with the sabre catching the female’s right arm, which fell to the floor while still holding onto the pole. The vampire screamed out in pain as she ran towards Amber. Amber held her sword in a back stance then spun around taking off the female vampire’s head clean off. The vampire crumbled into dust before Amber’s eyes.
Amber turned around towards the male vampire who was lay on the floor in a puddle of green blood. She strode forward and held up her blade, then swung it down finishing the job she removed the vampires head. Its body turning to ashes, blowing away in the wind.
Amber looked up at the roof and met Michael’s gaze.
“Not bad,” shouted Gabriel as she jumped down. “Not bad at all.” Michael stood on the roof top and sniffed the air, something wasn’t right; he sniffed again, more vampires? No that can’t be right he thought, then he saw them, all six of them with victims in tow.
Amber walked over to Gabriel, “I think that went quite well,” she laughed as she put the sabre back into its scabbard; “Well except for the part where I got hit in the head.”Amber wiped her brow removing the blood.
“You did just fine,” smiled Gabriel.
“Guys, we have company,” shouted Michael as he leaped off the building, holding Damocles in his right hand. “Six vamps with victims!”
“I can’t see any,” began Gabriel as she turned around and saw the vampires walking around the street corner holding three victims. Two were already bleeding quite badly from the neck, their clothes covered with blood.
“Looks like they couldn’t wait to eat,” breathed Amber as she pulled the sabre back out.
“What have we here?” growled the first vampire as he looked carefully at the three beings who stood in front of the building, which they needed to enter. The second vampire threw one of the injured humans to the floor and hissed as he put his foot on the man’s back pushing him down so that he was face was in the dirt.
“Dessert,” smiled the vampire as he crouched down and grabbed the injured man by his hair wrenching his head upwards as he bit into his throat, sucking noises could be heard as the vampire fed on the poor mortal. The man screamed out in pain as he tried to claw the ground, attempting to drag himself away from the beast.
Michael pulled the blade out from his arm and threw it at the vampire closest to him, hitting it directly in the chest. The vampire howled out in pain as two vampires rushed forward and attacked Michael. Gabriel kicked out striking one of the vampires in the head, stunning it for a second as she pulled out her dagger and struck out towards its throat. The vampire was too quick and dodged the blow, smacking Gabriel in the throat. Gabriel fell backwards onto the ground. The vampire leaned down; grabbing Gabriel’s hair he pulled her head upwards exposing her throat.
Amber came forward and over cut the vampire removing the head, it turned into dust releasing Gabriel’s head “Thanks.”
Michael swung around with Damocles cutting at the vampires, removing limbs from two of them as another vampire rushed him, knocking him over onto the floor. Michael lay on his back looking upwards as two vampires leaned over him attempting to expose his throat. Michael stamped down with his foot, spring releasing the blade in his shoe as he carried out an upwards kick, catching one of the vampires in the eye. The eye burst, green blood pouring from the creatures socket “Grosse!” said Michael as he cross cut upwards with Damocles removing the vampires head.
Gary Lamar couldn’t believe his eyes as he stood up and ran behind a large metal container, he had met up with his two friends’ for a quiet drink and was on their way home when they got attacked by these creatures. Gary was in shock as he watched his friends struggle for breath. “What the hell are those things?” he breathed as he watched the battle before his eyes, the one on the floor just cut one of the things heads off, and it exploded what the fuck is going on!, Gary ducked down as Michael flung one of the vampires into the large metal container he was hiding behind, the vampire hit it with a loud bang!.
Amber and Gabriel were holding off the other two vampires. Amber used her sabre making cuts to the vampire’s arms, but the vampire was very quick dodging her strikes easily, then the vampire came forward and smacked Amber hitting her head upwards. Amber’s feet left the floor as she flew backwards and cracked her head on the floor hard. Amber tried to focus as everything went black.
Gabriel used her dagger making cuts to the vampire’s torso and followed the cuts with a punch to the creatures face; the vampire stumbled backwards, blood trickling from its mouth as it smiled at Gabriel and jumped forward.
Michael had already dusted the other two vampires and watched at the vampire jumped towards Gabriel; Michael threw Damocles, hitting the vampire square in the face. The vampire fell to the floor and turned to dust. Michael moved forward to retrieve Damocles. As he walked forward he noticed Amber on the floor, blood pouring from the wound in her head. Then he noticed the vampire as it came forward and gripped Amber’s throat ready to bite. Michael took out one of his daggers and threw it at the beast, hitting it in the shoulder; the vampire looked up and hissed. Michael came forward and over cut the vampire so quickly that the creature didn’t have time to move, the vampire crumbled to dust.
Michael leaned down, and gently scooped up Amber from the floor, she was still breathing, that’s good he thought as he moved towards Gabriel. Michael removed his coat and laid it onto the floor then placed Amber on top of it. Michael looked up at Gabriel “Next time I say no, Gabriel, I mean it!” snapped Michael as he watched Amber slowly come back around.
“I never knew this was going to happen, Michael!” said Gabriel as she kneeled down next to Amber on the floor.
Gary peered over the top of the large metal container to find his two friends on the floor covered in blood, as he looked around he saw a man and woman crouched over girl who looked like she was bleeding pretty badly. Gary stood up slowly, “It it safe to come out?” he asked as he stepped around the container.
Michael looked around and saw a man around 5ft 7 dressed in a suit, slowly make his way towards them. Michael reached out with his senses, he didn’t seem infected. “Have you been bitten?” He asked as he stood slowly his hand touching Damocles hilt.
Gary held his hands up in submission “No, just my friends,” he gulped as he looked over at his friends bodies on the floor, for a second he could have swore one of the hands moved. Gary blinked as his friend James’s hand defiantly moved.
Michael looked over at the corpses on the floor. Great two more vamps, just what I need he thought as he walked forward and stabbed the two bodies turning them into dust before they could finish their transformation. Gary couldn’t believe his eyes, he stood there dumbstruck, eyes wide, mouth open.
“Go home!” said Michael as he turned around and walked back towards Amber and scooped her up. Michael folded his jacket around Amber ensuring she was covered and warm as he carried her back to the church.
Gabriel walked towards the man and touched his shoulder, Gary slowly looked at Gabriel making eye contact her eyes were hypnotising thought Gary as everything went black.
