Chapter 3- Suddenly
The carriage ride to the nearby City took little less than an hour, and all the while the storm followed them, increasingly screaming it's rage at them, hurling wall upon wall of rain seemingly in an attempt to hinder them.
Even the lightning seemed angry with them, criss-crossing the sky overhead as if trying to intimidate them into stopping, but all the time the Countess sat there in silence, calm and composed even when the carriage slide and threatened to nearly over turn on a muddy corner.
Eventually they passed the outer walls of the Ancient City of York and onwards to it's medieval prison. There the Countess was led inside. Where a even more nervous desk Sergent took down her details and even in these dank surroundings she seemed to effortlessly maintain an air of unshakable dignity. That was when it happened, he can only describe it as a blur.
The room dimmed and went out of focus, then the windows blow open with such force the windows shattered and the room was filled with the screams of the dying. The young Policeman heart and uniform was savagely ripped at by an unknown force that shredded both to pieces in a matter of seconds. His heart stopped beating seconds before his dying screams did.
Moments later the other escort was battered about the head repeatedly by a unknown force, blood pouring agonisingly down his face, all he could do was groan meekly as relentless, unseen blows reigned down on his face repeatedly until all that remained was a bloodied pulp and he slumped to the floor dead.
All this happened before his eyes in a matter of seconds, then he turned, irrationally fearful the Countess might have been hurt. but she stood there proud, as if in the centre of the storm and in her outstretched hand, unstraining she held the desk Sergent aloft from the ground by his neck. Than she snapped his neck as if it was a twig and with a scream of satisfaction she throw his now limp body effortlessly across the room where it crashed with a thud against a distant wall.
Then she turned towards him, her eyes boring into his as if trying to reach in and pluck out his soul.
He was transfixed to the spot, but found the courage inside of him that he did not think was there and held up his crucifix and with a conviction he thought he had long since lost, he said;
"Behold the Cross of the Lord, May his mercy descend upon your torture soul and forgive your dark sins and deliver you from Satan's companionship......''
His words trailed off, as he realises his mistake, for before him was no longer Marina de Kauffman, her features had now been distorted and changed. She had now become her long dead Grandmother.... Elrine.
"O'my god" he muttered "the dead walk the earth this very night..... Lord have mercy on all our souls"
Then as if screaming in triumph Elrine De Kauffman hurled herself at him and in a split second was upon him tearing at his clothes and biting at his neck, covering it in distinct bite marks which rapidly became stained with slender streaks of blood. Then she sinks her fanged teeth deep into his neck and he has no choice but to succumb and fall unconscious and subsequently into darkness.
