grand day out
Jack liked the horses,
spent all morning reading form
two quid ‘round robins’
were his usual flutter,
sometimes, if flush, a yankee
forty years married
he planned a ruby wedding
return honeymoon
trip to Benidorm - Brenda
would be bloody pleased with that
one winner, two thirds,
nothing back, as usual,
‘let’s have a day out
what do you say to Filey?
nice restaurant? fish and chips?’
a sulky ride home,
Brenda wanted better than
cold cod on the beach -
a waitress service cream tea,
china cups, buttered scones
Jack was at a loss,
he'd done his very best but
once more, failed Brenda -
he broke the silence, saying,
‘I could do with a goodie’
two grey heads stared through
dusty windows wondering,
how life came to this -
a dull, slow, pain-wracked fading,
Brenda passed a Murraymint.
