This tragic violence surely results from bitterness and unfairness. Netanyahu should step down in shame and failure. Further Lebensraum has been created for Israel by occupation and control, by settlement building in places where it was not meant to be under UN Partition, by walls and wire fences.

 

Biden should not be encouraging him, or giving them extra weapons with which to defeat those who wish to stand up against Israel. Surely they have quite enough of their own weapons already!

 

    It seems the death toll from the Hamas massacres on southern Israel has risen to 1,400, a very brutal figure. But what actions do the aggrieved nation of Israel carry out? Revenge and Retribution of the most medieval kind. Are we living in a 21st Century Paradise, or have we been transported back to the medieval times of the Mongol attacks, or the Crusades? In just a few days, under the ‘justifiable trustworthiness’ of the aggrieved Israeli military they have managed quite easily to exceed the number of their own massacred citizens. In response and revenge they have managed to kill 2,800 Palestinians of whom 1,000 may have been children, with many more injured and homeless, and it has not even finished yet! And all of this with the ‘permission’ of Mr Nice Guy Biden and the leading European Nations! (Alfred is recommending that the Israeli Defense Force and the Air Force be sent back in time to the medieval times, where he is quite sure they will feel very much at home! At least then the Palestinian people might be able to start picking up the pieces?)

 

     It does seem strange when even the calls for restraint from Russia (Liar Lavrov himself, on behalf of his puppetmaster Putin!) and from conservative Islamist Iran seem more rational and fair than Biden’s pats on the back for Israel’s excesses! I thought the modern United States was supposed to be an arbiter of sensible conflict resolution, but they seem more to be facilitators of right wing Israel’s bullying self righteousness, barely concealing their thirst for yet more territory, and yet more controls over a cast aside, subject population, whom they are in the process of terrorizing, and frightening into medieval removals from their blitzed homes.

 

    Israel should pick a genuine moderate to lead them so they can build real bridges with the Palestinians, whose lands have gradually been taken from them. Alfred feels there should be no lights of the Israeli flag on public buildings in Western Capitals, unless they change their attitude to the building of a real peace, except perhaps in sorrow, mourning and sadness for the dead and injured and homeless of both sides.

As the current 'war' crisis in Palestine/Israel developed Alfred Muggins has felt moved to express more of his feelings on the subject, for which he is quite likely to be castigated by blind followers of the 'Israel Can Do No Wrong Brigade'.,of which there seem to be rather many in the 'Don't Look Back at History' team, (unless it is three thousand years old!)

Ordinary Palestinians and Israelis can get on perfectly well together, as can ordinary Russians and Ukraines and people on either side of many other conflicts. It's the people in power who are the problem. The politicians, the banks, the arms manufacturers, the oil companies, the pharmaceutical companies, the religious zealots and the media. Without war they don't increase their power and they don't make money.

Yes I would think that in the right circumstances, including politically and with fair rights and treatment, I would think they should be able to get on perfectly well together. The problems might well be the unfinished peace process and creeping settlement building and restriction of Palestinian rights in occupied territories.

You may well be right on the other points. The religious zealots on both sides surely don't help,and there are certainly arms manufacturers etc making money from crisis and war. Thanks for your comment Turlough.

Powerful words from Alfred. It does appear to be Armaggedon over there. Not sure where this will all end. Sooner or later, the only way forward will be compromise. It's usually the case.

It does not look as if it is going in a good direction at all. The Hamas attack was very nasty, giving Israelis the perfect excuse to be very nasty back, and they certainly are being nasty, denying sufficient quantities of food and supplies into Gaza, using the Gaza strip as a pawn in a hostage negotiation, with the threat of severe shortages of everything needed to keep the population alive. It could well be that the Israeli hardliners intend to create a new refugee and homelessness crisis,and there is no sign of any trust towards Palestinians at all. Goodbye West Bank, goodbye Gaza! Biden is not using the crisis to push the Israelis into compromise!

He should be applauded not criticised by the west and bullied by Israel. 

The US in particular should face up to this truth and only supply the Israelli government with weapons in return for serious diplomacy. There has to be a balance.

I do agree with you Ed. Antonio Guterres the secretary General of the United Nations is very good. He has placed himself in difficult situations and done his best, a good spokesman for decency, fairness,and truth in this difficult world of propaganda, and bullying. Israel's leaders seem so selfrighteous and certain of themselves, when indeed they should be held accountable for injustices and horrors of the present and the past. They seem to think that because Israel was attacked in such a brutal way they are now free to do whatever they want without criticism or the normal/modern humanitarian principles we judge everyone else against.

The US shouldhave held Israel to account for the way they have ignored the peace process completely in recent times, and continued to breach past UN resolutions. They should not be given the best weapons,or any weapons, rewarding their misbehaviour, which has largely brought on the bitterness and hatred shown by Hamas, and the Palestinians generally. Biden has done a great job countering Putin's Invasion of Ukraine, but he has behaved like Netanyahu's poodle, when he shouldbe negotiating with them for Palestinian rights and fairness, as well as humanitarian decency.

An Israeli spokesman was outraged that the UN leader's words about Palestinian suffering outnumbered his words about Israeli suffering in a recent speech (yes, he had counted them). Perhaps it was because the number of Palestinian deaths so greatly outnumbers that of Israel's, and continues to grow.

Yes Di, you make a very good point there.Israeli retribution has already resulted in many more deaths and injuries, and home demolitions etc. than Israel has suffered 3 weeks ago. Lots of hypocrisy and propaganda from Israel, revealing something of the real nature of Netanyahu's government, even if it is now a broader and supposedly more moderate national coalition.
