European Election Day (23/5/19)

Brexit Brexit
Soft and meaningless?
Hard and reckless?
Racist or Fascist?
Why then do Labour support it with the kind of fervour which will never get the job done?
They don’t even want to talk to the Government about it,
So how do they ever reckon it’s going to happen?
Prevarication, indecision, across the nation,
In the Halls of Parliament.
No compromise in sight!
What on earth will we do?
What can be done?
Will it ever end,
One way or another?
It’s a conflict mirrored in the hearts of many;
Is Europe a centrist ogre,
facilitating the growth of big business in a Common Market,
but squeezing the small business?
Does it wish to consume us, a state within a state,
Draining our funds for generous projects on the other sides of Europe,
Or responsible for too much generosity to the rest of the world?
Will it ever have an army that will ever be used to do anything like encourage peace in Syria or the Ukraine?
Is the European Union a good thing,
protecting the weak and encouraging high employment levels?
After 3 years many of us are still not too sure.
Perhaps after the tough negotiations, which have only got us so far,
We recognise something pompous, condescending, or judgemental in it.
Or maybe the experts and the wise,
the people closest to the European establishment,
know what is good for us.
