Smoking in the Rain

I'm writing this now so that I don't forget
That night you were so stressed
And we went to campus so you could study
Your hair was a mess and your eyes were tired
When you asked me to go out a share a cigarette
I wanted to go home and sleep
But of course I said yes
The night felt like summer even though it was early spring
For a while you shared your burden with me
And I felt as though I could help you be strong
But then the rain began to fall
And all our plans were ruined
You turned to me with tears welling up in your eyes
But instead of asking to go inside
I taught you how to smoke a cigarette in the rain

Hello - I've been catching up
Hello - I've been catching up with the poems you've posted. Welcome to ABC Tales!
This is a touching picture of two young people just starting out, it feels, on an emotional journey. I particularly liked the link between the rain and the tears in the eyes. The night that felt like summer although it was early spring is a lovely detail, and I could clearly see these people, not being smooth, not necessarily getting it all right, but having a moment of connection that will stay with them, whatever happens. Nice work.
