Invitation to a Cocktail Waitress

Under the big sky,
at the edge of the desert,
are Las Vegas city limits:
meet me, if you dare,
where Bugsy met Lansky,
before Howard got richer
- went madder - than Midas,
and moved into the Desert Inn.
Keep on past the strip,
to the blade of the night wind,
into Nevada's oily darkness:
come late, if you care.
Where bones were buried, before RICO,
when Bobby went righteous - like Jack did -
and moved into holy dreams.
Under the big sky
at the edge of the desert
are a thousand untold stories,
read them, way up there,
where stars replace the stardust,
and night-time neuters neon
and the wind still knows your name.
