The Unstaring Eyes

Look, right there! Nope, it’s gone again. You know what I’m talking about. That feeling of someone, no, someTHING watching you. From the corner of your eye you can just make it out but as you spin around to see, it’s gone. Just a hint of an existence but your mind tells you there’s nothing there. I mean, there can’t be. But there is something there. There is always something there. People may tell you “it’s just your imagination. Your mind playing tricks on you” but that’s an obvious response to something that just doesn’t compute with most people. For us there needs to be proof or a scientific explanation for something out of the ordinary. Without this our tiny minds ignore things. Things that do exist and which ARE there.
As for what this visage is, no-one knows for certain but, if you pay enough attention the next time you see a flash of something at the corner of your eye, you just might see what many people have seen. A small pair of eyes. Red eyes with a black haze. This is as much as anyone has seen of it. For most people it will just be a blurry bit of black moving away from your eye line. Something you would never really stop and investigate. It’s very easy to ignore such a thing if you’re very busy or even if you just have something on your mind. Sometimes you’ll follow it fully because you think it may be something else. A spider or even a nasty fly that’s snuck into the room. In our heads these are the only things it could be. But you’ll find that there is no spider or fly there, just a trace of the last hiding spot of the unstaring eyes.
That corner of your room covered in darkness, it could be there at this very moment, staring back at you. You wouldn’t know. This strange visage or being loves the dark. It’s the camouflage that it hides behind to get an open look at you. You might think the red eyes would shine through the smokey blanket of darkness but the dark haze around the eyes dull the red. You just see a dark corner. “Aha!” you think. “I’ll catch it out,” but as soon as you shine a light in the direction of the corner those unstaring eyes will be off again. And you weren’t even close to catching a glimpse. When it doesn’t want to be seen, it isn’t seen. Simple.
I call this thing the unstaring eyes because, although it stares at you, it doesn’t. You almost feel like you’re chasing it…or it’s chasing you. Like a silent carousel slowly twirling around in the dark. One minute you’re hunting the source down certain that it’s within your grasp, the next minute it pops up and surprises you. You jolt in surprise before realising “nothing’s there.” It’s away again.
But what happens when the unstaring eyes stop moving and you finally come face to face with the visage behind those red eyes? What happens when the carousel stops and it doesn’t run away? The real fear of knowing the chase has concluded. But which side has the upper hand? You’ll be faced with something no-one has ever been faced with. So when you’re sleeping in your comfortable bed tonight, be sure not to toss and turn right into those eyes. If it stays staring at you, do me a favour and don’t tell me what it looks like. I really don’t want to know.

I'm glad I read this in the daylight! And I'm sure you'll understand when I say I hope I don't start remembering it when I go to bed...
Nicely done. I think your last couple of lines are particularly effective. I won't tell you if you absolutely promise not to tell me.
