Sleep Tight
Alert! In shock! Ink black. No sound,
He’s buried six feet underground,
No room! New suit. Soft cushioned walls,
No light! No Sound! No faint footfalls,
So weak! No air! “I must get out!!”
Straight-legged kicks and punches (stout),
One strangled scream, so loud within,
Nails claw and scratch and tear at trim,
Pause; conserve breath. Think, think, think, think!!
Bulging eyes and faecal stink,
Head butts and falls, the lid holds fast,
Whole life at breakneck speed goes past,
Nowhere to go, nothing to do,
Incessant screaming starts on cue,
Above, young wife returns alone,
To pay last respects before journey home,
Head bowed, more tears, another sigh,
But soil just then gives up his cry,
She turns; face twists in disbelief,
Quickly bringing mourners who share her grief,
Arriving before his screaming fades
Call gravediggers to action; soil meets spades,
So long it takes, so much earth to dig,
They who never smoked take offered cig,
Waiting in huddles, wife with priest kneels,
At last through earth new oak reveals,
Brass screws revolve and rise with lid
Beneath, one pretty mixed up kid,
Who when next gets to make another will,
Adds “second opinion” as codicil.
