The Ultimate Teenage Romance Novel, Chapter 1

    The summer I turned 16, he whispered in my ear, “one moment, infinite changes.” With one soft kiss on the lips, he marched onto the rugged Hummer as I hopelessly sat on the near-collapsing ivory bench, slowly realizing the happenings of my once routine life.

    Most people don’t realize they’ve found the right one simply because they don’t exactly know what their heart’s opinion of right really is. It’s natural feeling this way. It’s an elementary concept.

    Luckily, when push comes to shove, this supposed “right” one is, well, actually the right one. All the bumps and tugs are the wrong ones, and what better way to find Mr. Right than by knowing he’s not Mr. Wrong? But like all relationships, all needed to sustain is a little trust, communication and love.

    You can say that a relationship is like the Holy Trinity- God can’t be God without the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. You can’t have a relationship without trust communication, or even the smallest form of love. But who am I to talk of the all-powerful, omniscient, three-in-one, love-everlasting man upstairs? I’ll tell you one thing- life works in mysterious ways.

    I don’t ever understand it when people say life is short. If we as an intelligent, educated, and well-advanced society haven’t figured it out by now, then I’ll be damned. Stick it in your head- life is the longest period we’ll ever live through. Of course our lifespan is incomparable to that of Earth’s and the universe, but we are in the now. I believe it was St. Augustine who said that everything is in the now: the term “past” is only present memory while the term “future” is only present expectation. It’s an interesting concept, isn’t it?

    So it’s true what they say. Love is timeless.

    Tick-tock, tick-tock, my clock uttered while I laid in bed, imagining characters from the textures of my popcorn ceiling. The pitter-patter of the rain created a lulling rhythm, rocking my eyelids back to sleep, but the anxiety of my own being prevented my body’s desired slumber from occuring. I’d been in bed the whole weekend, snuggled between numerous nostalgic baby blankies and grandma-made quilts, covered by multiple layers of cotton and wool. The more I thought of this winter feeling, the more teeth showed through my smile, and the more the smile emerged from memories from the night before.

    On that Friday night, Alyn and Lina dragged me to Anne’s sweet sixteen kickback- the usual house party was what it actually was, fully equipped with the green bottles, cigs, dance, and the parents long gone. They’d both giggled off into the corner for they only came because Germz and Squid were there. Not a partygoer, I myself settled down on the couch, watching the movement of the people in front of me by milliseconds of strobe light, slouching and ready to kick rocks. I wasn’t up for getting fucked up that evening as I had been for the past 3 Fridays and the fact that I was forced to crash here against my will got the best of me.

    I then felt the cushion lower on my left side.

    “Hey,” said this boy, placing his arm on the ragged plaid armrest of the sofa. “You look bored.”

    My mother’s always told me that sarcasm is not ladylike and that I should refrain from doing so.

    “Oh. Really. I hadn’t noticed.”

    “Whoa, there. Easy, girl.”

    “Excuse me?” I replied.

    “Sorry, Miss Offensive,” he retorted with a chuckle. “I’m Ricky.”

    I ignored his comment and looked at him. I could barely see his face through the darkness of the garage, but I managed to shake his hand. “Haley.”

    “Haley? Sing me some Conspiracy.”

    Already in the crappiest mood, I muttered a shutthefuckup. I hoped he hadn’t heard me and thought I could barely hear him through the blast of Marvin Gaye.

    “Alright, alright, alright. I get the picture.” He was on the verge of pushing himself off the couch but then sunk back down and turned his head at me, seeking a response.

    “Sorry, I’m just ridiculously bored.” I let out a deep sigh. “Why aren’t you dancing with Jess?” She was the school slut you could say, flirting on every boy in a 3-mile radius.

    “No, no. I’m sorry here, but the real question is, why haven’t you danced the whole night?”

    “What? Are you eyeing me?”

    “You’re quite a sight.”

    “Then don’t look.”

    “I have the right to look where I want, thank you very much,” he announced egotistically.

    “Then I believe I’ll get out the way.” I stood up from my spot and eased through the freaks on the dance floor. I grabbed a soda and popped onto the sidewalk. I heard a male voice shout.

    “You’re really gonna do me like that?!”

    “The Butterfly Effect”: Ashton Kutcher, Amy Smart. Five stars.

    I’m guessing the significance of a butterfly--- they only live for six hours and are born as tiny inching creatures, furry and dwelling on Earth. Then they turn into something beautifully colored, fluttering around, yet only with ephemeral existence.

    The movie shows how one moment could alter an entire reality. So every movement is a contingency to your living. It’s funny how your life depends on right now.

    Ricky was walking towards me, I assumed. I assumed wrong. He was running, and it was pointless seeing as the driveway was only twenty-five feet away from the couch.

    “I’m Ricky,” he held his hand out.

    “I know, we just met,” I replied, denying his hand gesture and turning to face the full moon onwards to my right. I sat there on the cold cement with my hands wrapped around each other and arms on bended knees. I ignored Ricky’s incessant chatter. I believe he had a feeling he was participating in a one-sided conversation, but I figured he didn’t catch on when I heard him say,

    “So, what do you think of that?”

    “I wasn’t listening,” I blatantly replied. I had my own things to think about as my mother was recently found cheating on my dad with my best friend’s mom and she the same.

    “Oh.” He walked away. That ought to do him good.



    The black widow: femme fatale, lulling and seducing her lovers, just to bite their heads off and devour in the end. I wouldn’t know why she’d be so cruel and heartless, but the sad part is that Mother Nature’s made her a natural heartbreaker. In human definition, at least.



    After a long night of party, I figured it was time for me to get home: I’m an avid fan of slumber and sloth. I walked home, only ten blocks away from Anne’s place. Thank God for suburbia. I was freezing my butt off until I heard an approaching motorcycle, stopping in the midst of my path.
