Heavy as earth, light as straw

You thought it would be different.
More eye-catching? Like athletes
are welcomed in their hometown
when they have won a gold medal
at the most recent Olympic games?
More melodramatic? Like actors
respond when at the end of the play
loved ones fall in their fiery arms?
You woke up from daydreaming,
but everything seems to be as it is.
The canals with the cloudy water,
houses with their shiny roof tiles.
The men with their precious cars,
women with their thoughtful looks.
The children who have received
a pot-bellied pig on their birthday.
And yet, this world is not the one
you still remember: wintry, woeful.
The clouds are softer, the sun is
humming pop songs, oak trees bath
in sweet light, waiters ask if you
would like something to drink,
sleepy tourists wearing straw hats.
You realize: this is the first time
days feels like amiable soulmates.

Definitely not disappointed
Definitely not disappointed, really an excellent poem Itane!
Immediately made me think of Dylan Thomas, "There was a saviour, rarer than radium. commoner than water, crueller than truth", I think it's about his father, the ending is more about a brother "two proud blacked brothers cry, winterlocked side by side etc".
Anyway I am digressing.
And that little fat-bellied pig soon doesn't clink and ching anymore replaced by “IOU” scraps of paper” booze works out expensive.
Cheers Bud! Sober as a judge on sunday! Tom

There's a drunk in the street
There's a drunk in the street carrying on, full of rage and fury. Saturday night "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose", "if you aint got nothing you've got nothing to lose".

Lovely poem. Days that feel
Lovely poem. Days that feel like amiable soulmates is a nice respite from the ugly side of those other days. Much enjoyed.
