You peel back the satin dress,
murmuring your dissent,
far-cry from the leather and lace
I used to inhabit, palely,
in the bad old days.
You murmur at the alterations,
etchings of artistic hands,
and draw your own conclusions
as I stand to let the sleekness slide
from swollen limbs.
I have no pride where you’re
concerned, nothing to hide;
I’ve burned my innocence
in years of wasted cigarettes
and now I shake my head at your
addiction, bending to let you
caress my saddened breasts;
and as we trace the lines inside
these borrowed sheets,
rise and fall with tides and time,
I’m not here with you at all;
I’m imagining, closed-eyed,
summer rain on nakedness
the way we used to…
