WHY ROYAL?

WHY ROYAL?
Why honour Wootten Bassett with a royal accolade?
Did some monarch in the past enjoy its Grand Parade?
This cannot be, for it has none, yet people flocked from everywhere
To line its streets and quietly stood in reverence with heads lain bare.
While sombre lines of coffins, of the gallant and the brave
Passed by those grieving mourners in a solemn cavalcade.
So are there now no victims. None prematurely slain
Has conflict ceased throughout the world and is there peace again?
They did not like the message those arbiters of war.
To give them wealth and power is what the fighting’s for
So hundreds, thousands perish. They could not give a hoot.
No crowds at Wootten Bassett. We’ll simply change the route.
Why honour Wootten Bassett with a royal accolade
Oh No! My friend. It’s not because it had a Royal Parade.
People forget the thousands who came to count the cost
Of healthy, brave young people these pointless wars have lost.
Of countless stricken families whose lives were torn apart.
Who now are left with nothing but a broken heart.
