Chapter Eighteen
The hands on the clock seemed to be going around very slowly as John nervously waited for his sister’s return. He was drumming his fingers on the kitchen table not knowing what to do with himself. He was just about to walk to the phone when he heard the key turning in the front door.
“Mary is that you?”
“Yes John, I’m back.” He rushed into the hallway to see his sister smiling the biggest smile he had ever seen. Then as she stepped forward, Lucifer entered the doorway. John stepped back with his mouth wide open; he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Lucifer’s face was almost glowing and his eyes were now a darker brown with a hint of gold just like a tiger’s eye.
“You have found your way, haven’t you? John asked excitedly.
“Yes, John. I have your sister and an old friend to thank for that. I can’t believe how good I feel. Feelings long forgotten have resurfaced and I no longer feel like I want to kill and destroy everything. My evil side has definitely subsided and given way to my true nature.”
“Come here,” John grabbed Lucifer in a warm embrace. Lucifer awkwardly stood with his arms down by his side as John held him tightly.
“Okay you two, it’s time to talk about our next move,” Mary spoke quietly. John broke off the embrace and held Lucifer at arm’s length.
“Come on, let’s retire into the lounge where we can talk.” John watched as Lucifer led the way and Mary took hold of his arm, then looked skywards.
“God, you are wonderful,” he said quietly under his breath.
The three of them sat talking for hours about the events of the evening. John’s eyes widened with awe at what he was hearing.
“So my little sister, how do you feel?”
“Fine but I’m still a little confused as to what I’m supposed to have done.”
“Well after restoring your own faith and courage, you then found it in your heart to help Luther find his again. Don’t you see, Mary? You only had to be your true self for this transition to happen.” Lucifer interrupted them with an intense look in his eyes.
“The most profound thing for me was that Mary proclaimed her love for me. That I couldn’t understand. If she’d known half of the things I’ve done during my existence, she would most probably turn away in disgust.”
“Perhaps I already know unconsciously. I have always said since I met you, I felt I had known you, even connected by something, maybe it was love.”
“Yes, I think it most probably was,” John answered, “and maybe the Most High intended this to happen.”
The phone began to ring. John got out of his chair to answer the call. Mary could feel Lucifer’s eyes upon her while John was in the corridor.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“I am just looking at somebody that has been untouched by man and the influence of evil. Somebody who has remained in innocence. It is as though I was seeing something I have lost, something that feels so familiar.”
“Luther, I see in you a beautiful light that has faded for some reason, but I do feel that this light will shine bright again once you find what you are looking for.” John entered the room again.
“That was David worrying about you Luther and where you were. He was panicking because he thought you’d run off. He’ll be round shortly to pick you up.”
“I suppose it would be good to get my head down. I’m exhausted.”
“Yes, you’ll need some sleep Luther, because what you discover tomorrow will take even more strength and fortitude than today.”
“What do you mean John?” Mary asked.
“Well Luther has his meeting with the brotherhood. What they are going to tell and show him will require an inner strength of the highest level.”
“I am intrigued,” Lucifer answered with apprehension, “how can they tell and show me what I already know?”
“Tomorrow morning, I guess you will finally know.”
“Yes, I suppose I will.”
“Anyone for tea while we wait for David?” Mary had risen to her feet.
“Yes please Mary and lots of −”
“Yes I know Luther, lots of sugar,” Mary headed to the kitchen and closed the door. John turned to Lucifer.
“So Luther, how does it feel to be this new you?”
“It is a paradox. I feel strange and yet normal, the only way I can explain it is that I feel as if I have been living with a hood over my head in complete darkness, so much so that my mind, eyes and heart accepted that darkness as normal. However, now that darkness has been lifted I am seeing the world in a different light. Although it still does feel there is a piece of me that is missing. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Hopefully tomorrow I will get my answer.”
“For your sake Luther, I hope you do.”
It wasn’t long before Mary returned with the tea and the three of them started chatting. Time flew by and David was soon knocking on the door.
“Well Luther, it looks like your ride is here.”
“Yes, thank you for the tea and conversation.” He bent down to pick up his coat.
“Please leave it here Luther, I’ll wash it and return it to you tomorrow.”
“Thank you,” he handed her the coat, “Mary I want to say −” Mary put her hand to Lucifer’s mouth.
“Please you don’t have to say anything. What I experienced tonight told me everything I need
to know, but I will have another hug before you go.” She threw her arms around Lucifer and squeezed him tight. This time he responded and squeezed her back. David was impatiently knocking on the door again.
“I think we’d better let David in before he knocks down our door,” John said. He went to the door, and David stormed into the house to find Lucifer.
“Thank God…” David stopped in mid-sentence as he observed Mary and Lucifer in a warm embrace. “What’s going on?” David asked John.
“It’s a long story. I am sure Luther will tell you on the way home.”
“Are you ready Luther?”
Lucifer turned back to Mary. “Will I see you tomorrow?”
Mary smiled. “Nothing will stop that from happening. Now go and get a good night’s sleep and when tomorrow comes you will finally find out who you truly are.”
He walked to the doorway and took hold of John’s hand with a firm handshake.
“Please take care of her, John.”
“I will and I’m sure we will both see you tomorrow.”
“Goodbye,” he said and stepped outside, then stopped and turned to see Mary smiling at him. She whispered, “I love you”. A tingling went down his spine and then he turned and headed down the path to the car.
“Wait Luther, wait for me.” David was eagerly following closely behind him. “You have to tell me what happened today.”
“This happened today.” He turned around, took hold of David and lifted him off the ground in a warm embrace. David didn’t quite know what to do as he struggled with his feet dangling off the ground. “You see David, I am a new man and I feel good for the first time in my life.”
“I’m feeling that. I see you like me now, it’s a start.” Lucifer laughed and let go of him.
“Now David, please take me to your brotherhood. I feel I am ready for them now.”
