A Single World to Change Prologue

I opened my eyes to the sight of a large, wrinkled goblin perched on my chest. A warm glob of drool smacked my cheek. Definitely real.
The goblin noticed that I was awake and bared its vicious fangs close to my face. It's breath was warm and smelled like a rubbish heap.
“You're awake, boy. At last!” It snarled, splattering me with foul-smelling drool.
I let out a futile scream of shock. No one could hear me, not here. Maybe wherever Hazel was, tucked up in bed, she was listening. But she wouldn't help me. Not now.
“Silence!” The goblin, who had covered it's pointed ears, screeched at me.
I clamped my mouth shut and lay there, my lower body losing feeling.
“W-why are you here?”
Its head was split by the grin that spread from ear to ear, its eyes narrowed as if pleased.
“I think you know why.”
I was sure it did, but that didn't help me. Hazel could have sent it for any number of reasons.
“Um, maybe you could tell me anyway? I'm sure you want to.”
I was surprised that its grin could get any wider. My, what big teeth you have.
“Why not? We've got time.”
“All the time in the world.” Unfortunately.
“I've been created to punish you for what you did, you know? You definitely messed up, she's pretty angry.”
I sighed. I had suspected as much, but Hazel had gone a little overboard. A goblin?
“How about you tell her I'm sorry instead?”
Snickering, it itched its chin with a long, sharp claw. “No can do. She wants to scare you, you know? Get you back.”
“Well, I'm pretty scared. Is that good enough?”
“No.”
“Let's cut to the chase,” I snapped, “what do I have to do for you to go away?”
It frowned, skin bulging over its low brow. Thinking? Maybe. Plotting is more like it.
“Okay, how about you let out another of those screams, only-” It raised a hand as I opened my mouth. “Wait for me to get out of here first.”
It slid off the bed and walked to the window on stick-like legs. As it reached the ajar pane, the wrinkled head swivelled round.
“Make sure she can hear it, okay? Who knows what'll happen, to me or you, if she thinks I've failed.”
I nodded as the goblin hopped out into the complete darkness.
As I screamed I thought back to the time I had first met Hazel, two weeks ago on just another ordinary day. That girl in the red jacket.
