Like Edith Piaf, I have no regrets.

My fling with Willy may result in a relationship or it may not. It doesn't matter, it served its purpose. I am a firm believer that a woman has the right to make her own decisions.

We spoke about it and could have resolved there and then to shack up together but on reflection we thought that a more flexible arrangement would be better. We didn't want to live in each other's pockets.

The chalet was out of the question. What happened with the previous occupier had been an experience to remember.

He left in the small hours as he was concerned that his presence might tarnish my reputation.

Acting on Willy's advice I have called once again on Hilary to update her on my findings. I have given her the binoculars and the girl's photo and am waiting for her response. She doesn't say anything so I take the initiative.

“ Where is Gideon, Hilary? It seems to me that he has a hidden agenda but I am at a loss to understand how I fit in.”

“ Right Jessica, I am going to talk candidly but in the strictest confidence. When he was made head of Section, power went to his head. He started seeing treachery everywhere. At one department meeting he asserted that when you applied to join us he found a file in the archives relating to your family that he could not reveal but put you in the category of a security risk and that he would keep you under surveillance himself.”

“ Poppycock”, I object, “all he was trying to do was to get into my knickers.”

“Quite so, but we didn't suspect it at the time. We discovered later that he though of himself as a Casanova and was trying to screw anyone in a skirt and sometimes succeeding, He only thinks with his penis and that is his weakness.”

“But where is he now and what is he doing?”

“That's the 64000 dollar question. We can't find him. Although he has officially being furloughed, he is absent without leave and believed to be in hiding with the woman in that photograph.”

“Do you know who she is?”

“Oh, yes. Her name is Maruska Dementikova and a Russian 'swallow'. He has been reckless enough to unintentionally confide classified information to her during sexual intercourse.”

“He must have caused a lot of damage to the Service.”

“Not quite as much as the Russians think because she had been on our radar for a while and we have been feeding him false information.”

“So what happens next?”

“He has been suspended and I am in charge now. When we catch him he'll suffer the consequences.”

“It will be nice to have a woman at the top for a change”, I say.

Secretly I think he has flown the nest and has defected to the enemy.

'It's nice to have a woman at the top.' I agree with that. I wonder if Gideon has defected to the enemy...the traitor wouldn't surprise me at all.

Thanks for pointing out the error in the last line. An extra 't ' got in the way. Corrected now.
Glad you found the story intriguing; this is just one episode, the 16th, that must be read in conjunction with previous parts to make sense.
