Swift Fly the Years

We met in a café
off Tottenham Court Road.
At the time she was thinking
of living abroad.
To ‘make love not war’,
was the height of fashion
and we soon were caught
in the grip of passion.
I remember very clearly,
as if it was yesterday,
the moment I got Lucy
in the family way.
She kissed me and said
she would never repent;
I asked her to stay
but she still went.
When she was in Geneva
and realised she was pregnant,
she married a man
understanding and tolerant.
Many long years
have gone by in a flash
and I’ve often wondered
if we’d been too rash.
I have now seen her son
who’s a strapping lad
and I wish he knew
that I am his dad.
