Old Poetry

Recently I dredged up
some old forgotten rhymes
Just to read and re-discover
those old and happy times
I remember people seemed to think
the stuff was rather good
To my surprise, and total shock,
they were misunderstood
On reading through these ancient texts
I was soon to see
That all praise that I had gained
did not belong to me
But to some long forgotten ghost
or none-existent chap
'cause, frankly, when I read them now,
these early rhymes are crap.
You see it takes more than simple rhyming
flowing text and perfect timing
you need to have a feel for life
for love and death, for pain and strife
It's no good to just start writing
It doesn't work unless you're fighting
straining for each passing moment
that flickers and wanes within in instant
this is something I never had
and that is why my stuff was bad
time has passed and I've moved on
and now I find the poetry's gone
but still I wonder in the night
what could have made me write such shite
