When her mum died she started painting
and even though I don't have much money
I said 'how much for everything?' and now
I own it all, everything she will ever create
and her back catalogue, her mum
charcoaled on cartridge paper in her NHS bed,
giving the thumbs up,
an oil painting of the flowers on the gravestone
etchings from childhood holidays.
In return all she asked for was that I painted too.
She bought me a paintbrush
and left me to get the rest.
Now her walls are full of the dreadful, meaningless
images I feel forced to create.
She says it's funny how bad they are,
that when people come round they can't
actually believe it.
