Chapter 2
(Part 1)
Midge Goes Shopping
The honeymoon was over and Charlie and Midge returned into the little cottage that had been given to them as a gift from Midges parents .
She never really wanted for anything and was very lucky young to have wealthy parents and now a loving husband by her side . Charlie was her first love and she was madly in love with him . She wore his ring and bore his name and felt as complete as she had ever hoped she could be ,
Midges father had always been very protective of her most of her life mostly because he feared that some gold digger would try to marry her because of his wealth .
His other fear was that someone would try to kidnap his daughter and hold her for ransom . That was the reason that he kept her like a prisoner on his farm and he felt happy and at peace with that . He never counted on his daughter meeting a man in the local grocery store so at first he was a little surprised but when he saw how happy she was and how much they loved each other he approved of their relationship . All he really wanted for his daughter was that she would be happy . Mrs Powers was also very glad to see her daughter finally settling down with a man . She never wanted her daughter to grow old and grey never knowing what it was like to be in love and to share a life with someone .
Even though Midge always loved the outdoors and going horse riding around the farm there was more to life than horses and going fishing with her father and so now that she was a married woman Mrs Powers could finally rest at ease knowing her daughter was now a married woman with a future with the man who really loved her . Already up now in their own little home life was good . One of the wedding gifts was a donation of money that was put together for Charlie and Midge from the Powers family .
Due to Charlies work commitments running the store it was decided that Midge should go on a shopping spree to buy some items they might need and there was nothing more in the world that Midge liked best than to go shopping She was an expert and had a good eye for a bargain . So off she went in her element with a hired driver and a car for a day in the city to buy anything she pleased . She had a sizeable amount of money to spend and Charlie was ok about whatever she did He told her to-shop until she dropped .
She left early in the morning on her shopping trip , away along the road from her little country cottage to the city . The first few miles were such a relaxing experience with green verdant hills rolling all around in a beautiful part of Ireland that was surrounded by mountains and lakes .
The closer to the city they got the more built up the scenery became .
t was a quiet life that Midge had lived on the farm ,
She never really wanted for anything and was very lucky young to have wealthy parents and now a loving husband by her side . Charlie was her first love and she was madly in love with him . She wore his ring and bore his name and felt as complete as she had ever hoped she could be ,
There was a market at the first village they came to so Midge asked the driver to stop and park somewhere . She told him to have a look around and to return in an hour . As midge walked into the market’s she saw lots of different stalls there selling all kinds of things .One of the stalls sold hand made Celtic jewellery , The lady welcomed Midge who was looking through some of the broches and necklaces .
“:Good morning . Is there anything in particular you’re looking for ?
Midge said
“I was looking for something unique . “
The stall holder replied ,
“I haven’t seen you around here before “
Midge replied ,
“Well I’m on vacation here for a few weeks” :
Midge was always good at making up stories . She stood there as the sunlight shine on her face and her cheeks were aglow like apples in the snow .
“Isn’t that just grand . Sure your very welcome to browse through the items here on the table but if its something unique you’re after, then let me show you some of these .
The lady went over to her van and brought over a large display case with some engraved metal work on the front . Midge watched her bring the case over saying ,’
“This looks very intriguing “
The lady there opened up the case to reveal a series of brooches and she said
“Some of these are very unique pieces from the second century BC “
Midge ran her good eye over them all and the lady who had the stall opened up some more drawers and secret compartments in the case displaying rings and necklaces .
Like a magnet Midge was drawn in .
“I really love some of these . It makes me think of the people who had worn these back in those days . “
The jewellery maker said ,
“Most of these were designed and hand crafted during a time of great change in Ireland between the third and the sixth century BC when we lost contact with Europe and there was a marked rise in the building of hill forts . “The jewellery makers of that time were very deeply focused in their craft .‘ .
“These pieces are extremely unique and yet I am leaning more towards some of the annular brooches . (Pointing to one in particular ) This one here to me resembles the Ballyspillane brooch and another you have here looks like a London Spur brooch or maybe the Hunterson brooch .”
The jewellery maker responded ,
“Yes of course m nut look here is the famous one for you , the Tara brooch which was actually found in Bettystown in 1870 . People didn't know that the Irish had done such amazing works because of colonization by the English and the destruction of our culture “
Midge smiled and said ,
“I’ll take it . That’s exactly the one I need . How much are you asking for it ? “
:This brooch is for you and all I’m asking is 250 pounds “
Midge said ,
“Ok , I’ll give you what you ask because I can see it’s a reproduction but I love the two tone effect and the spiral engravings . There is a combination of metals that interest me .”
The lady smiles and said
“You really know your Irish jewellery . I made this one myself and I hope that it brings you happiness and many admirers. “
Midge replied ,
‘Its actually for my Mother , She always likes to wear brooches when visitors come to play their music at home “
She handed the lady the money and in turn the jewellery maker presented her with the beautifully wrapped article inside .
