Chapter 9
In The Mist
Once upon a time before time had begun there was a mystic place in the heart of the country called Orlosscomuckindo . In that magical place there were wee ones who lived , simple lives . They spoke of times to come when a mist would fall and before it cleared there would be a reckoning and those who lives there would see for the first time a new land appear beyond their mountain home . But that was in a time ina time to come and for now the wee ones were lively contently telling their stories and making the best of the sunlight that shone before the mist would come .
One quiet night as the moon shone down on Orlosscomuckindo a strange shimmer of light raced across the Northern skyline . Shooting stars dressed the night sky with a train of sparkles as they raced across and fell into the lake by the Alapacap Mountains . The lake there was said to have been filled by a number of underground springs and from time to time the lake would be emptied then after a while it would refill again . It was also known that some other lakes around the country would have the same thing happening with the water being emptied then refilling after a time had passed .
The lake near to the Alapacap Mountains provided for the needs of people who lived there as well as all of animals there .The water often lay still like a mirror cradled in between a valley . On one side of the lake was the a fir tree forest where other wee ones lived and they had a King who had a daughter called Ellie who was always unhappy . She was always sad and had no voice . There was nothing anyone could do for the Princess to make her talk or be happy . Even though she had the best clothes and the best food . As a matter of fact Ellie had the best of everything but she never spoke and she never smile . She was always lonely and sad .
Every night the Princess would be found star gazing out her window into space .
The King of the wee ones was very worried about his daughter and one evening he said to hjer ,
“Ellie why do you keep staring out the window looking into the sky “ .
She took a crayon and wrote a note on a piece of paper ,
“I want to live in a silver castle in the sky “
The King suddenly started to laugh . Ellie never blinked and she pointed to the message she wrote , again and again .
The King didn’t know what else he could say to cheer her up .
He he came up with an idea and asked all of the wee one and the creatures of the forest and sent out messages all over Orlosscomuckindo for anyone who could help his daughter be happy . So wee ones came one after another with music and songs , making magic and doing silly dances for Ellie . Dogs came a-walking with funny on clogs and frogs came hopping , some tip tapping on their flip flappy feet .
Cats came along wearing socks and frocks , trying to juggle rocks , squirrels came jumping over nuts and rabbits came thumping on drums but the princess just sat there disinterested .
The King sent for clowns to come and so in came the clowns doing hand stands and flapping their big feet slipping over and knocking their heads on the floor but not even a smile appeared on the face of the princess who was as sad .as the day was long .Day after day All over Orlosscomuckindo they came to cheer up the Princess bringing her gifts . One of the we ones made a doll that could walk and talk and another wee one made a ball that bounced and sung .
A prince who was once a frog came wearing a gold crown that shone on his head telling stories about being a frog but still the princess was sad . Nothing seemed to work . The King sent out all his messengers far and beyond searching for anything or anybody, anywhere who could make his daughter happy .
The wee ones sent out whispers into the mystic woods and in the valleys the whispers were carried by the wind to all the wee ones and creatures of the need for the Kings daughter to be happy .
Foxes came running with cunning tricks and even dolphins and fish jumped out of the lakes onto water tanks that arrived on trucks and trailers to perform before the princess . There were birds and butterflies who flew though the air with beautiful their songs and dances taking their chances at making the princess happy .
Every night and day we ones and small animals would come and go with the same result and no answer for the King who was in despair .
One night there was a magic feeling that was felt all over the land when without any warning or sign of it coming a mist fell down from the Northern sky . It was thick silver mist that fell down all over the lake there . Many had said that it even looked like it was a silver castle there that had appeared in the middle of the lake.
The night that the mist fell , was the very same night when princess Ellie had mysteriously disappeared . For weeks and weeks King Papalap stood by the window looking up at the sky and calling out his daughters name . The King was heartbroken and he decided that he would go out in search for his daughter .
He went on foot and made his way through the magic forest . Then walked on and on until he came to the edge of the mist near the lake The King walked into mist and found himself standing in a scarlet rose garden where a scent of perfume overpowered him and sent him into a deep sleep . When he awoke he was helped to his feet by a gardener who said his name was Percy .
The King asked Percy if he had seen a beautiful girl called Ellie . Percy just smiled and clicked his fingers , suddenly butterflies and birds floated from rose to rose and brought soft petals over and laid them at the feet of the King . The petals all changed colour and in a moment they turned into the wings of butterflies that flew away .
Bees from honey hives surrounded the King and their buzzing tickled his ears .The buzzing grew louder and louder until it deafened the king . He could not hear a thing until to his delight and amazement the next sound he heard was the soft singing of his daughter Ellie who took him by the hand in the scarlet garden .
The King never returned back from the mist and some of the wee ones have said that when the mist clears and the stars fall down from the sky, only then would the king and the princess return again to the magic forest .
