ONCE

The once steady hand trembles
At the slightest grasp.
Where calloused fingers gripped,
Now smooth ridges slip
Along the edge calling, calling
For a stronger fist to battle
Gravity pulling away all
Sinew, muscle, tendons
Fragile as a reed in winter
Waiting for sun’s return.
Life resumes, turns green
A moment or two then departs
Leaving memories that sleep
Until morning resounds with
Echoes of a step, the whisper
Of memory diminishing with time.
