Destiny

I walked the night
All sticky with sweat
No end in sight
Full of regret
The temperatures rise
The John’s come a plenty
To my surprise
There is one of gentry
We sat in his car
Talking of the weather
The encounter bizarre
We just sit together
A carrot and a half
He took from his pocket
Its own epitaph
Engrave with a locket
The pictures inside
One of him and of her
He showed me with pride
‘It belonged to my mother.’
His mother was dead
His girlfriend had vanished
Tears they were shed
I let him finish
For all that we did
Talk about our lives
Me and my kid
His nearly wife
The hours they passed
Sunrise approaching
Then he asked
What I was just hoping
He suggested we go
On a proper date
I should have said no
But this could be fate
After months of seeing
This lovely young man
My heart was seeking
With him a clan
A different ring
Then he showed me before
My heart daring
Our love pure
We were wed on the first
Month of the next year
My heart fit to burst
The congregation did cheer
I had never believed
In true happiness
Our daughter conceived
Born at Christmas
We looked down
At her in her crib
Had I not worked the town
She wouldn’t have lived
I believe it was fate
That brought us together
A house with a gate
We now have forever
