marian and aidan - a typical morning part 2
She was delighted with them and Aidan hasn’t copped yet. He doesn’t really like change does our Aidan. He hates seeing people wasting money on things they don’t need. He needed the shirts but wouldn’t admit it. Marian got them and took off the tags immediately. She then put them in the back of the wardrobe and slowly got rid of the older ones over a couple of weeks. She didn’t want to overwhelm him with the ordeal of putting the old ones in the bin where they belonged.
‘Did you check the wardrobe love?’ asked Marian. ‘Well I find it hard to find anything in that wardrobe with all your tat!’ replied Aidan. ‘What?’ Marian says with concern, ‘you probably have the wrong wardrobe! You do know that yours is the one on the left?’ ‘Of course I know mine is on the left you daft mare!’ ‘Excuse me?’ Marian stops him in his tracks. ‘Who are you calling a mare you gobshite!’ ‘What?’ ‘Oh for god’s sake’
Marian pulls off her yellow marigolds with force and puts her iPod back onto the window sill and
storms down the hall and into the bedroom. Aidan follows at a more leisurely pace. When she gets to the bedroom, Marian finds Aidan’s wardrobe unopened. ‘For god’s sake, he doesn’t even know
which wardrobe is his anymore. Then again I suppose he never really has to dress himself’ she mutters under her breath. ‘Aidan, Aidan!’ she calls out. ‘I’m coming, I’m coming’ Aidan shouts back. ‘Keep your hair on woman!’ Then he mutters under his breath ‘this woman will be the death of me!’ rolling his eyes.
He comes into the room and sees Marian standing tapping her foot in the corner with one hand on her hip, the other on the door of the ardrobe. ‘Have you looked in here?’ Marian asks. Aidan blushes with embarrassment. He’s been getting a bit confused lately. He comes over to Marian with his eyes on the floor. He stands beside her and scratches his head. ‘Now’ she says, ‘you tell me that you can’t find anything in here?’ Aidan scratches his head again, speechless. ‘Here are all of your shirts, all hung up and ironed. Then on this shelf are your vests. Then your jumpers on this shelf…….need I continue?’ ‘I thought that one was mine’ Aidan says pointing to the one beside him. Marian sighs and rolls her eyes. ‘what in the name of god has you thinking that this one is yours,’ Marian starts, ‘I mean why would you have a hot pink top with worlds best Gran written on it. And look here,’ she points to the skirts that were hung up, ‘did you think these were yours? I mean come on!’ she looks at him with pity.
Aidan looks confused. ‘Oh I’m sorry!’ Marian goes over to him and gives him a hug. She realizes that maybe she was a bit harsh. ‘Come on love,’ she grabs his hand and sits him onto the bed. She then goes to his wardrobe. ‘Here,’ she says with a smile and kind eyes, ‘I believe you’ve been looking for this,’ she produces a blue shirt and kisses him on the head. ‘Ill go back to my iPod. After all the dishes won’t wash themselves’ she says and walks off. Aidan gets dressed.
The same thing happened once again. Marian is singing away once again with her marigolds on washing the dishes. This time it still sia but its titanium. ‘I’m bulletproof nothing to lose fire away,
fire away, ricochet you take your aim fire away fire away. You shoot me down but I won’t fall. I am titanium. You shoot me down but I won’t fall I am titanium I am titanium’ then in the dance break she really gets into it. Her eyes are closed. She feels the beat go all the way into her heart.
Aidan nearly frightened the shite out of Marian once more. She opens her eyes after the dance break and he is standing beside her. She was not expecting anyone to be there. Her whole body jumped and she put her marigold covered hands over her chest and let out a dull shout as she did so. ‘Jesus Mary and holy saint Joseph, you’ve done it to me again.’ She shouted, flicking a tea towel at him playfully. He moved away from the tea towel smiling. It seemed to be happening a lot lately. ‘Will you do my tie please?’ he giggles.
‘Can you do my tie please?’ Aidan repeats. Marian takes off her marigolds and puts her iPod back on the window sill. ‘Come here’ she says quietly.’ ‘What?’ ‘Oh for god’s sake will you give me the feckin tie’ she says loudly. She takes the tie roughly and puts it around her own neck. She does the knot loosely as she says; ‘you look extra handsome today’ as she takes off the tie and puts it around Aidan’s head.
‘What scent did you use love? It’s different than your normal one.’ ‘I just found it in the bathroom
cabinet’ he answers. ‘What? What do you mean you found it in the bathroom cabinet?’ she asks. ‘Please don’t tell me it’s the one with the blue lid!’ ‘Yeah it had a blue top, how did you know?’ ‘That’s dolce and gabbana light blue. That’s the one Nel left here last week when she stayed over.
I hope you didn’t use too much of it!’ says Marian. ‘Whoops! Is that the one she rang us about the other night?’ asks Aidan. ‘Yeah I think so!’ Marian answers. ‘I only used a few drops!’ Aidan grimaces. Marian sees in his face and he smells as though he used a bit more than a few drops. She looks at him and smiles and says ‘sure we can get her another bottle for her birthday. It’s not too far away. Yeah, the bottle was almost gone anyway.’ She looks at Aidan and he has a twinkle in his eye. He winks at her ‘thank you!’ and kisses her forehead.
Marian fixes Aidan’s tie and looks up at the clock. ‘Its time for you to start making tracks’ ‘Why? What time do I have to be there at?’ ‘The appointment is for ten o clock’ ‘and what time is it now?’ ‘It’s quarter past nine now!’ ‘Id better start making tracks so’ ‘ok so, be careful love, ok! Hopefully it’s just a bit of wax!’ ‘Thanks’ saysAidan. They kiss and Marian goes back to the iPod and starts dancing again. Aidan smiles and exits the house through a door down the hall.

Some very lively dialogue in
Some very lively dialogue in this story. I like the gentle humour and the convincing exasperation/affection of the long-married couple.
In places the tense wanders a bit between past and present so that could do with a bit of editing
Is there more to come?
