You

Here is a bit of flash fiction. picture from pixabay.
Look at you! You are a pathetic blubbering mess! Why did you ignore your friends when they suggested to get a cab home? You were in no fit state to be driving! I mean you could barely walk! You and your pride…pathetic! Look at where its gotten you!
That poor girl was just out on a run. She did everything right; she had her yellow reflective vest on; there were even reflectors on her runners! Why didn’t you heed your friends?
You probably didn’t notice it but you were swerving in and out of your lane on the deserted street. It even registered in your brain that she was coming towards you on the footpath…but still…
When you finally managed to stop the car and got out, why didn’t you ring for an ambulance? Why didn’t you try to help her? You were too intoxicated was why! You staggered over to her and when you saw she was unconscious, you just waddled back to the car again and took off. How could you have slept last night with visions of the obviously injured girl in the back of your mind?
Now look at you! You are a disgrace to mankind! How did you feel when you got the call? How could you hold it together when your best friend rang to say that his sister was killed in a hit and run last night? Did you think it a dream? An out of body experience? When you got the call and then went out to check your car for damage, what crossed your mind? How did you feel knowing that instead of simply taking a taxi, there is now a family, a family you are quite close to, are grieving for the loss of their Veronica? Yes, you know her name!
Look at the gash over your eye from where you hit the steering wheel. I want you to stand here and remember that this is no game! Look deep into your eyes, all blood shot and red. I look at my reflection, a vision that is imprinted on my brain, and will always be reminded that it is not ok to drink and drive…lives are at stake…. poor Veronica!
