Piss off!
You say to me
OK
Your words are enough
Council estate rough
That’s what you brought here
And you can’t leave it behind
Not even at this late stage
So that’s what I’ll do
I’ll piss off
You’ll be left to your own devices
Good luck
You see,
I’ve moved a long way from here
In all those years
Far from those words
From the need to argue
The awful noise of you and my father
I hoped for reconciliation
But it’s not there
The bases are vacant
This isn’t about snobbery
Or some sense of superiority
It’s about one respecting the other
About dragging yourself out of that hole
Where existence is predicated solely on
You
A tough one, I admit, with the education they inflicted
But
I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have that conversation
Right now
Away from here
In a world you cannot accept exists
Except in an occasional fifteen minutes between adverts
I remember what my father said
Fahrenheit 451
And all that
At what temperature does a corpse ignite?
And at what point do we walk away
To the China tea cups or a Catholic bar
And forget
And who cares?
