Ebb and flow

I used to think I was something special

Coming here from a good job

with savings and a track-record

Now I realise that I’m nothing

I am what I can do (today)

I'm worth what I can earn (right here)

And that’s not a lot

It was always going to be that way

I knew it

and I planned for it

But all the planning in the world couldn't have prepared me

I’m no more than the sum of what’s inside my skin

Everything else is bravado and bullshit
