The parents have absconded

Looks like they've left for good.
Head up to the attic and have a dig around. You always knew what was up there, but they wouldn't let you see.
There’s a few things in the cellar, too. Down in the corner underneath the stairs. You know because you put them there a long time ago. It killed you that the place was out of bounds.
The parents had been slipping out, but always coming back. You resented that, but your smile hid it well.
As their absences extended, the smile was harder to maintain. Once in a while, it faltered, put you in a spin. But if the parents heard you whispering behind closed doors, they didn’t let on.
It was nice to have some secrets – conspiracies, signalled with a nervous grin and the offer of a cup of tea, to those who might be trusted. Few that they were.
Always, the parents made their presence felt – spoiling things. But now it’s different. Take a few baby steps. Test the water. Sneak up to the attic.
Aaaaah. Everything’s still there. Have a little play. Feel good?
Bring the trinkets down. Leave them scattered on the floor. No need to look behind you. No one there to catch you out.
And now, best of all, the cellar. Darkest corner. You can have what was always yours. And nobody can stop you.
Who? The parents?
What did they know? Anyway, they’re gone.
