Hearts Connect Us

When the world is cloaked in sadness
And hatred takes a form
When life matters too little
To some
And those small few
Destroy the sum
Our hearts cannot beat easily
Looking for the enemy among us
Too close
And unknown
No discerning markings to distinguish
Hatred has no smell
It breeds in silence
Destroys in seconds
All that we hold dear
In fear
It is victorious
And its mantra
Love must die
Challenges our existence
Creating havoc and unrest
Destroying communities
Putting neighborly feelings to the test
To stand amidst this heartbreak
And find the will to live
To hear the challenging voice within us
Demanding we stay the course
To remain who we are
And never let the madman
Rule even one precious day of our life
This is a testament to human strength
To be unbroken by the deed
When kindness and humanity
Beats defiantly in our hearts
We’ll stand together
Challenging the fear
And One day
Raise our heads in victory
Cheering on
When hatred dies
Overthrown
And buried
Under a headstone
Marked solemnly

This is a lovely piece. We
This is a lovely piece. We have been reminded recently of how powerful poetry can be at times of national grief. I like the way this reads as a declaration of (all kinds of) faith, a credo for getting through terrible times. Really touches the heart.

Oh, Penny4athought, I so
Oh, Penny4athought, I so dearly hope so. Let's keep trying to spread the love. Great piece. Delicate treatment of a dreadful topic. Well done.
