Two Roads

There is a road not travelled
Running parallel to mine
It is bright with sunshine
Smoothly paved
It tantalizes and beckons me
I wonder at the cost
to cross to that road
Do I have the fare?
What is the fare?
Impossible dreams
I extend one hand into the sunshine
Capturing a handful of promises
That glitter in my palm
Turning to butterflies
Just before I step back…
Back into the shade of my well worn path
Feet firmly planted
The road I walk upon is familiar and rutted
Worn in places where I’ve walked in circles
Hilly where the road became difficult to navigate
Dark and windy when I’ve lost my way upon it
I look down its crooked lines
To familiar truths
Painful lessons
And small victories
Over the rocky, sandy,
Hilly road of my life
I see the corners of sun filled friendships
The parks and beaches ahead
The coves and fields I’ve yet to discover and
The tantalizing bends in the road

Hi Penny,
Hi Penny,
it's always hard to travel down new roads when we're so used to the one we're on. Taking that leap into the unknown is a challenge to overcome. I like the way you describe the familliarity of the road you're on and can identify with your words.
I like this poem because it makes me think of my own situation with my new hip and the new challenges that are ahead of me. You remind me that sometimes walking down a road I'm not sure of is only scary because of my imagination and I must take the plunge if I'm to explore new places.
Thank you for sharing, it definitely gave me food for thought.
Jenny.
