My name is Pinda and I go to college,
Don’t socialise much but I revise to build knowledge
At times I find that I have become a virtual recluse,
I let my belt of interaction hang decisively loose
But I came here to learn and that’s the life I choose,
If people think I am a geek then they can hurl the abuse
A lot of students think I’m boring and say,
I am a weirdo and must be a nocturnal gay
I do not care because when I get a good job and good pay,
I’ll purchase a house for just me and my brother someday
You see we were not blessed to be fed with a silver spoon,
We were forced to roam the streets and sleep in the city ruins
The age of nine my brother was diagnosed with acute Leukaemia,
Had to fund his treatment, so I decided to join academia
Get myself some education so that I could help my brother,
Keep a promise to my mother because I really did love her
My father left us for some prostitute he supposedly married,
Ditched me and my mother, and the unborn baby she carried
She died giving birth and her last words were ‘love him’,
Made a promise to her that I would never deprive him of nothing
People offered us support but I kindly refused the help,
Mainly because my mother did the same for me, and did it herself
Never accepted money from friends but would sometimes sleep with men,
At night when I heard them make noises,
I’d put my headphones on and pick up a paper and pen
I would write out my feelings that I concealed in the form of a rap,
I’d read it on the streets whilst people threw coins in my cap
Then at the end of the day I would give every dime to my mother,
She’d put it into the pickle jar, labelled ‘contributions for your brother’
We were saving up so that this new baby could have toys to choose,
But one night my dad took the jar out and spent every penny on booze
My name is Samuel and I go to college,
Don’t socialise much but I revise to build knowledge
Now you know why I want to achieve the best,
So that I can finally let my loving mother rest
She needs to know that her sons are doing well,
I love her, and my father, I hope he’s burning in hell
