Chapter Three
Conquest of Chimera
Maybe it was Kian’s frame of mind or maybe the cloud quilt had actually darkened. It did not matter. He was going to fly this morning. He was going to give Kia her freedom. He would be by her side. However, she would never be in his fist. Kia was another part of who he was clearly the best part. Even though he could no more cast her away than he could pluck out his right eye and hurl against the sky, he would set her free. Moreover whatever lay beneath the clouds was hers. If it was not his to give he would make it his. He owed her that.
He reached out and grasped her hand. She smiled. He bowed his shoulders forward. His back slits opened. His wings unfurled casting a great shadow over them. However, something else was coming from them. They were humming. A low power-line hum buzzed behind him barely audible teasing his eardrums like a gnat.
“They’re singing Kian. Do you hear them? ”
He reached behind him as his right wing tip arched over his shoulder. “I can move them like fingers,” Delight lifted Kian’s words. He gently grasped his wing tip. “They feel my fingers. They feel the breeze. They feel the sun. This is wonderful.”
Kia smiled knowingly and threw back her head. Her wings blossomed. “They live Kian, just like us they live.” With that she glided over the railing, her wings gently undulating massaging the air traversing it with hypnotic grace, as she dipped out of sight then soared back into view filling Kian’s field of vision with beauty and his eyes with tears.
“Come,” she yelled down at him, her face another sun in the sky.
He drew in deep breath. He spread his wings as far as they would go creating a twelve by five foot canopy of thick white feathers that could magically collapse into his back without making the slightest bulge. He did not think about that. He did not care. His future soared above. Suddenly the balcony was beneath him and Kia was in his arms.
They kissed spinning across the sky, their wings singing and rippling with breeze dancing against the blue.
They were not flying. They were daring the ever darkening cloud field and the undiscovered world it hid to touch them. It was challenge that would not go answered.

I love the description of the
I love the description of the wings as having their own life. It's original and unusual and brings this passage alive. I was also very struck by the phrase 'His future soared above.' I think this chapter is really well written and gives a new insight into the character of Kian.

How wonderful it would be to
How wonderful it would be to fly like Kia and Kian, to soar above the clouds, to feel the wind.
You took me there with this chapter.
Beautifully done.
Jenny.
