A Home in the Country

Home in the Country
Along the road they walked
some called it a driveway from
country road to country home.
Hand in hand
chuckling at his kidding around
and now her turn. Seems
long ago as she window-peers
once more waiting for him to come
down this gravel path
hiking from the field with a fire
in his spirit and loving on his mind.
Trees along the roadway
still bloom in the summer
sky azure with memory
and her aging heart and mind
seeing everything
as if it was just the day before
the Lord came and took him home.

I didn't see that last line
I didn't see that last line coming. The scene is very well built up, inviting the reader to invest in these characters, and feel a genuine sadness for the woman watching and waiting.
