CHAPTER TWELVE
Heading through the thickening trees was no longer difficult. Their direction was clearly mapped out in their minds. Familiar trails under their feet reminded them this was the right way.
Melting snow and squishy soil soon became a dry and hardened path. They heard the movement of rabbits and mice. And hooves striking stone as deer moved aside to let them pass.
Father and son, man and boy were a team. And Dad led the way. Their bond of knowledge knew what was ahead, in this new partnership in the family.
Leaving behind the last of the towering forest, they saw a familiar sight. A rainbow blinked with color. The sky pastel blue, with marshmallow clouds floating about as popping corn seeds.
On the shore, ‘Boots’ lay in the fullness of a warm summer afternoon. His grey and white fur shimmered in the breeze.
Father and son stepped out of the shadows. Then confidently passed through the tendrils of mist. With determination they strode to the river.
Their fishing rods were at the ready.
